The Center for LGBTQ+ Health Equity, within the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join its team. The postdoctoral associate will be under the primary mentorship of Dr. John Blosnich, whose work focuses on health equity and suicide prevention. The candidate will have work opportunities ranging from community-led projects such as the Los Angeles County Child and Adolescent Suicide Review Team to NIH-funded projects, including a project to develop and implement training for death investigators to gather sexual orientation and gender identity data and several projects exploring non-clinical efforts to pursue public health approaches to suicide prevention. The position involves management and analysis of study data, creating manuscripts for publication, and contributing to research grant proposal development. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with the research team, doctoral students, and undergraduate students.

The candidate will contribute to meeting all aims of the study. The successful candidate will engage in the following which include but are not limited to:

serving as a research trainee to enhance and develop research related to health equity and suicide prevention; managing primary data collection, data cleaning, database organization, and quantitative and qualitative analyses; leading abstract and manuscript development and management for first-author publication opportunities; contributing to competitive research grant proposal development and submission; developing and implementing research results dissemination strategies; developing mentoring skills by working with undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students learning research processes and skills; participating in team meetings.

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent research doctorate in the following fields of interest or related field: public health, social work, psychology, sociology, prevention science, health services research, statistics/decision sciences, epidemiology and/or community health
  • Training in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods
  • Demonstrated research experience through peer-reviewed publications/conference presentations in mental health and/or suicide prevention
  • Competency in data analytic programs such as Stata, R, ATLAS.ti, NVivo
  • Familiarity with virtual data collection platforms (REDcap, Qualtrics)
  • Organized with excellent time management
  • Mastery of both writing and public speaking
  • Initiates independent projects and inquiries
  • Collaborative and works well in a team setting

The annual rate range for this position is $65,000 - $70,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

This position 1 year and renewable for an additional 1 year on the recommendation of the faculty mentor. It is 100% grant funded. Hybrid on/off-campus work schedule is preferred; potential to be fully remote is based on the discretion of the supervisor.
