Job Duties
The University of Minnesota, Department of Forest Resources is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to work with an interdisciplinary team using remote sensing techniques in order to assess hydrologic conditions necessary to support cold water fisheries in Great Lakes region trout streams. The team consists of members from the University of Minnesota, Trout Unlimited, and multiple federal agencies.

The postdoctoral associate will use quantitative methods to identify priority cold water fish refugia for restoration and/or protection in the White River Watershed (Michigan). This will primarily be done via analysis of remote sensing and other field data collected by partners. Depending on the skillset of the associate, the individual will also lead writing a review of current literature and/or conduct further geospatial and hydrologic analysis related to cold water refugia of importance in the Great Lakes region. The associate will conduct at least one field visit to the site, attend and present at scientific meetings (~2 per year), collaborate with the project team to disseminate findings to stakeholders through participation in meetings; webinars; short, recorded videos; etc.

Research will be supervised by Dr. Diana Karwan in the Department of Forest Resources at the University of Minnesota, will have regular collaborative work with partners at Trout Unlimited and federal agencies, and receive collective mentoring across the team.

Approximate breakdown of duties on an annual basis:

  • Data analysis (60%)
  • Manuscript / Report/ Presentation Preparation (30%)
  • Field site visit / assist with data collection (10%)


Required Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in hydrology, environmental science, natural resources, conservation sciences, or a closely related field by the time of appointment with a background in one or more of the following areas of study: watershed hydrology, or community and/or landscape ecology with exposure to hydrology.
  • Candidates must have a familiarity with environmental remote sensing data analysis, and/or groundwater-surface water exchange in support of cold water fish habit, as well as familiarity with hydrologic response to climate change.
  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience in scientific writing and communication with scientific and/or resource management audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a varied mix of internal and external partners from diverse communities and cultures using tact, diplomacy, initiative, and sound judgment.
