Job Description
Policy Lead, Economic Justice
LOCATION: Washington, DC (preferred) or from any of the following states: VA, WV, MD, NC, DE,NJ,PA,NY,MA,RI,CT,ME,NH
DEPARTMENT: Economic Justice
REPORTS TO: Director, Economic Justice
COORDINATES WITH: Advocacy, Alliances and Policy Division (across the Division), the Gender and Climate Justice teams in the Global Partnerships and Impact Division, Media and Digital teams in the Public Engagement Division, and with Oxfam International and other Oxfam affiliates as part of the global inequality and global tax teams.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: The policy lead on economic justice will help provide policy and advocacy leadership to address economic and racial inequality both in the US and globally. The role holder will work with others to influence US policy and drive narrative change to fight inequality and end poverty. They will be responsible for engaging policymakers, supporting and commissioning research, preparing reports, monitoring inequality trends, and collaborating with colleagues at Oxfam America, within the wider Oxfam Confederation, and with Oxfam allies. While the policy-lead will engage a range of economic inequality issues, specific engagement and experience with issues of international and domestic taxation is an advantage.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • *· Analysis: Prepare briefings and reports that provide analysis on issues relevant to economic inequality in the US and relating to the US government’s role internationally. These will include issues of wealth and income inequality, progressive taxation and worker power, and the policy lead will likely interact with a range of areas including social spending, anti-trust, and intersect with climate, gender and racial justice and corporate power.
  • Policy change: Build relationships with and engage the Executive branch, Congress and civil society allies to secure policy outcomes that tackle economic, racial and gender inequality. More specifically, engage issues of and coalitions on progressive domestic taxation (including on wealth, progressive income taxation and corporate taxation) and international corporate tax reform (and the role of the US law and policy in the global tax architecture).
  • Perceptions: Build and pursue efforts to drive public narrative change on inequality issues, recognizing how and which ideas and beliefs to challenge and promote to shift public perceptions.
  • Relationships: In cooperation with internal stakeholders, collaborate with external allies working on US inequality issues, and interface with U.S. government decisionmakers, as well as supporting engagement with fundraising and donor community.
  • Representation: Represent Oxfam America’s inequality priorities in both internal deliberations as well as external-facing opportunities, including to the media, public-speaking opportunities and on Capitol Hill etc.
  • Discourse: Help to drive Oxfam America’s thinking on economic and racial inequality, ensuring an intersectional approach inclusive of racial and gender justice, and decolonial approaches abroad.
  • Monitoring: Keep a pulse on the US political and economic landscape as it relates to issues of economic justice and inequality, for colleagues at Oxfam America and the wider Oxfam Confederation.
  • Internal collaboration: Work with teams across Oxfam America and the Oxfam confederation to shape strategic planning regarding economic inequality in the US and international contexts.

Qualifications*
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: *

  • Education: *
  • *· Advanced degree in economics, international relations, public policy, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Experience and Core Competencies:

  • At least 7 years working on inequality-related or economic justice issues.
  • Demonstrable passion for, and track record in the service of, economic justice.
  • Relevant and substantial experience engaging government and considerable understanding of inequality-related policies in the US
  • Strong understanding of the U.S. Congress, and the policy-making process.
  • Outstanding research and analytical skills relevant to public policy.
  • Outstanding ability to articulate complex economic analysis in a compelling, actionable manner.
  • Demonstrable experience driving analysis of inequality issues.
  • Comfortable working in a flexible way: switching between inequality issues and contexts.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills; ability to prioritize workload and multi- task.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and strong professional writing skills.
  • Experience in integrating economic, racial and gender inequalities.
  • Creative, and strategic thinker, able to push the boundaries in teams and on economic ideas.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with international and domestic taxation issues is desirable but not essential.
