Job Summary

This position is responsible for supervising the development of production cost, resource adequacy, and capacity expansion analyses. The results of this have a significant impact on the overall operation and performance of the power system as well as have a great economic and financial effect on PSEG Long Island, LIPA and Long Island ratepayers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyze costs and performance of the existing electric system as well as future generation, transmission and power purchase proposals as part of the least cost resource planning process.
  • Develop long range forecast that includes zonal and nodal power prices, generation fuel consumption, emissions output, congestion cost, renewable generation/curtailment and other power marketing information to support projects and other departments.
  • In coordination with Transmission Planning and other departments, perform studies, develop various alternatives to address system needs and make recommendations for projects.
  • Identify potential operating problems and the financial impact; and provide guidance to the Electric System Operations department.
  • Provide assistance to LIPA in determining the viability of different generation and transmission projects.
  • Develop annual as well as monthly fuel and purchase power budget for LIPA.
  • Integrate PLEXOS model into resource planning for capacity expansion as well as production cost analyses
  • Develop major generation expansion plans with associated capital expenditures in accordance with criteria for short and long range planning of the electric system for maintaining future operating goals.
  • Research and analyze new public policies, conceptual ideas, generation technologies, and modeling methods and present findings.
  • Interface with other company departments and LIPA, as well as represent the company on various regional working groups, task forces and regulatory proceedings.
  • Supervise staff of MAST engineers and/or contractors as well as technical assistant.


Job Specific Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Working knowledge of engineering economics fundamentals necessary to evaluate alternative system proposals.
  • Minimum 6 years of system planning (combination of resource planning and/or transmission planning) experience.
  • Minimum 2 years experience working in high profile committees working on reliability initiatives for NYS.
  • In-depth knowledge of production cost and reliability system planning models (MAPS, MARS, Promod, GridView, Strategist, PTI PSS/E, PLEXOS). Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills as well as ability to travel to attend meetings on and off Long Island is required.
  • Ability to respond to emergency storm and other conditions requires field work during nights and weekend.
