Job description

Maine Medical Center is seeking an experienced Clinician Educator to serve as the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director.

This fellowship includes three primary training sites: Maine Medical Center, Togus VA Medical Center and Hospice of Southern Maine. Maine Medical Center (MMC) is the state’s leading tertiary care hospital and the only academic medical center in Maine. There are over 280 residents and fellows at MMC from over 26 ACGME accredited programs. The Togus VA Medical Center includes acute care, an inpatient palliative medicine and hospice unit as well as several long-term care units; Togus is located five miles east of Augusta. Hospice of Southern Maine is a Medicare-certified hospice agency with an inpatient hospice facility and an average census of over 180 patients throughout York and Cumberland Counties. We encourage applicants to consider watching these videos about our program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM5tslWMHbA) and the MMC GME community (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54Yus82F5gk).

The Fellowship and Program Director benefit from a strong relationship with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI) and its health services branch, The Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE). This relationship facilitates the success of our division’s research and QI initiatives. In addition, MMC has an Institute for Teaching Excellence (MITE), which provides a centralized, coordinated, high-quality infrastructure to promote and enhance the development of faculty in Maine. MITE provides creative and relevant educational activities in multiple media, and raises the prominence of faculty in Maine.

The Program Director will be responsible for developing and maintaining the fellowship curriculum and evaluation system and ensuring the program meets all requirements as laid out by ACGME and Clinical Learning Environment Reviews. The Director will guide strategic planning for the ongoing growth and development of the Fellowship program, in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine and Medical Education. The Fellowship Director will devote 75% of their time to clinical effort in palliative medicine.

Candidates will be Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and will have demonstrated excellence in graduate medical education. Candidates must also be experienced clinicians in palliative medicine with at least two years as an attending palliative care physician. Administrative and/or leadership experience is preferred; a track record in scholarship is desired.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.
