University Advancement (UA) supports the entire CMU community in building relationships with key constituencies and securing the financial resources the university needs to continue its ascent. As the division grows, we are seeking an assistant director, Donor Relations. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. Reporting to the senior associate director, Donor Relations, you will join a high-performing team charged with strengthening relationships with CMU donors and demonstrating the impact of their philanthropy on the university. You will create, manage and execute programs that steward and recognize donors via written communications and activities. You will be responsible for fully strategizing and developing assigned programs and projects, and overseeing successful execution. You will also collaborate with colleagues and divisional and university leadership on strategy development, including ways that Donor Relations activities can contribute to cultivation strategies for philanthropic gifts, and be responsible for updating key stakeholders on progress/activity.
Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Developing, managing and enhancing key stewardship and recognition processes and communications to donors related to their philanthropic support.
  • Serving as project manager, lead writer and researcher for custom-produced donor communications, such as annual impact reporting.
  • Devising strategies for meaningful donor recognition via custom impact communications for individual supporters, impact pieces for broad audiences, recognition for capital project donors and other tactics which convey the impact of giving.
  • Building and carrying out communication strategies and touchpoints to convey the impact of the highest-level donor gifts in a direct and personal way.
  • Assisting with endowment reporting and program-based impact reporting, such as data management, editing, writing and review.
  • Recommending new initiatives and other meaningful touchpoints for a variety of supporters.
  • Managing and utilizing digital platforms, when appropriate, for the collection of information and the distribution of philanthropic impact reports.
  • Maintaining clear, accurate and detailed reports and records.
  • Identifying, proposing and managing projects designed to improve processes and efficiency.
  • Serving as liaison and resource to departments and colleagues both within and outside of University Advancement, including members of university leadership.
  • Staying apprised of donor relations and stewardship best practices and industry trends, as well as relevant data pertaining to donor behavior/preferences in general and at CMU.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree preferred
  • Three to five years of alumni, constituent or donor communications and/or stewardship and/or development experience
  • Experience in higher education preferred
  • Strong understanding of best practices, strategies and metrics for donor communications, relations and stewardship
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, CRM or similar donor databases is preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel
