At Merrifield Garden Center, we strive to provide an unparalleled selection of the highest quality plants and gardening products. We are dedicated to continuous education and sharing our gardening guidance with employees and customers alike. Founded in 1971, Merrifield Garden Center is a family run, full-service garden center, nursery, and landscaping company with three locations in Northern Virginia and an extended family of over 600 employees. We are looking for friendly and knowledgeable people to assist customers while they shop for plants and gardening supplies at the garden center.

The primary need of this position is for our perennials department, but you will need to be familiar with all of the different types of plants that we carry in the nursery, including trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials, and the different types of gardening supplies that we carry, such as soils, mulches and fertilizers. While candidates who possess some level of plant and gardening knowledge are preferred, our primary goal is to find people who are good at sales and enjoy helping others. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about all the plants and gardening supplies we carry from our team of experienced horticulturists. Some of the primary responsibilities include: • Greeting customers, learning what types of plants they are looking for, and making suggestions based on their particular growing environment.

• Answering plant or gardening questions and guiding them on proper planting and watering procedures. • Facilitating the sales process by getting the customer the bar codes they need to take to the cashier, and then having the plants pulled to the loading dock. • Helping coordinate deliveries or plantings, and making sure that the plants are pulled to the hold area. • Answering customer phone calls and emails.
• Watering plants and making sure that the nursery is neat and clean. • Communicating with fellow sales people, cashiers, loaders and phone operators as part of team to ensure complete customer service and satisfaction. Both full time and part time opportunities are available. The ideal candidate must possess the following: • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Positive, respectful, can-do attitude • Knowledge of plant material and gardening • Ability to work individually, or in a team environment • Ability to stand or be physically active for hours at a time • Willingness to work outdoors, rain or shine • Ability to lift and move plants • Ability to work independently • A degree in horticulture, landscape design, business management, communications, hospitality or a related field is a plus Evening and weekend availability will be required during our peak season.
