The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O’Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.

Position Summary & Preferred Qualifications/Experience

The Neurology Department is looking to hire a Patient Financial Advisor I for their clinic. The prospective candidate would ideally have previous Patient Financial experience working in a healthcare / Clinical setting and have previous experience with insurance verification and procedure authorizations. The candidate is expected to operate with limited oversight and guidance to provide financial counseling and clearance to patients that occurs within the department.

Experience and Education

High school diploma with four (4) years of financial counselor or equivalent experience

Associate degree with two (2) years of financial counselor or equivalent experience

Bachelor’s degree with no experience

Job Duties

Provide financial counseling for patients within one department.

Responsible for confirming patient insurance eligibility and providing benefits review.

Reviews benefits to ensure that organization and patient understand the extent of coverage for services.

Accurately utilizes cost estimate technology to create cost estimates for services and communicates estimated costs to patients and other affected parties.

Accurately posts payments and assists in the creation of payment plans for upcoming services and/or outstanding balances.

Responsible for reviewing account details for patient education and/or correction.

Reviews balances and communicates to patient and other affected parties about outstanding balances.

Assists patients in resolving account questions and concerns.

Responsible for coordinating and completing financial assistance application for charity care program.

Responsible for understanding the revenue cycle, including all involved parties and appropriate escalation pathways.

Knowledge of various regulatory agencies: JCAHO, Medicare/Medicaid Laws, State & Federal Laws, Hospital/Departmental Policies.

Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
