DEPARTMENT MISSION: To assist physicians in diagnosing chronic wounds and determining appropriate therapy. To assist physicians in evaluating the efficacy of treatments, regimens to enhance optimal care. To assist clients to maintain wellness by providing information about wound healing and prevention. To enhance the recovery from chronic wounds by providing therapy and education for patients and there families.

PURPOSE:. The Patient Care Technician, under the direction of the RN, provides patient care and supports the department delivery system. Reports directly to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions (*) %of Time

  • Assists with admission process by taking initial vital signs, measurements, orienting patient/family to center, hospital facilities and services, and documenting on appropriate forms per center standards. (15%)
  • Delivers patient care promptly, accurately and according to center standards, policies and procedures, as well as patient's plan of care. Contributes relevant and appropriate information to RN. Maintains confidentiality of patient related issues. Supports the Patient Bill of Rights and Hospital Mission and Values. Participates in meeting and reinforcing patients' educational needs; documents accordingly. (15%)
  • Assists physician and/or nurse with procedures such as debridements, application of bioengineered skin grafts, dressing changes, TCOM. Demonstrates knowledge of sterile technique. (5%)
  • Monitors and accurately records patient wound/edema measurements. Reports changes in patient's status (e.g., changes in vital signs, weight, mobility status, blood sugars, or any unusual occurrences) to RN in a timely manner. (15%)
  • Assists office coordinator, HBO tech, RNs, physicians, Clinical Nurse Manager, or Director with clinical operations as needed. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills appropriate to the age, type and development level of patients. (10%)
  • Answers call lights timely and intervenes appropriately. Responds to patient and family requests promptly. (10%)
  • Transports patients to various departments and upon discharge. (5%)
  • Stocks supplies in treatment rooms. Removes equipment and supplies not in use; cleans equipment and returns to appropriate storage location. Keeps patient area clean and free of trash and clutter. Keeps linen appropriately stored; empties linen hampers and trash, as needed. (2%)
  • Provides and documents patient treatments, as appropriate to occupational scope. (2%)
  • Provides emotional support to patients and families, documents appropriately. (5%)
  • Attends and participates in center related in-services, conferences and meetings. (5%)
  • Collaborates by working with others to achieve unit and organizational goals. Utilizes proper chain of command for resolution of difficult issues. (2%)
  • Participates in center staff meetings and Pl plan to improve organizational performance and achieve unit and organizational goals. (3%)
  • Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures including Blood and Body substance precautions.
  • Performs additional duties as requested by Clinical Nurse Manager or Dept. Director.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Basic understanding of general nursing practice, including principles of safety and infection control. Knowledge of hospital and policies and procedures. Ability to observe and report changes inpatient's condition. Ability to spell and use standard abbreviations and nursing terminology.
  • EQUIPMENT USED: Patient call system, dynamo machines, TCOM unit, camera, computers, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, and other medical and office equipment.
  • MENTAL DEMAND: Reading, detailed work, confidentiality, problem solving, math, reasoning, verbal and written communication, customer contact, multiple concurrent tasks and constant interruptions. Must be able to work in an environment that is emotionally and/or physically stressful due to unpredictability of patient volume, great diversity of patients needs and increased risk of exposure to infectious diseases.
  • COMMUNICATIONS: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, interact with nursing staff, Physicians, patients, families and the public in a timely, accurate and courteous manner.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stands, walks, bends, and lifts throughout working day, kneeling, cleaning, balancing, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, writing, squatting, sitting, talking, hearing, handling, fingering, and seeing. Lifts patients and carries and push/pull equipment and supplies.
    • Typical workday involves the following physical requirements:
      • Very heavy work: exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or excess of 50 pounds of force frequently.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a clean well-lighted nursing unit. May be exposed to communicable diseases. Flexibility in shift and schedule changes/overtime as needed.
    • Constant exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent. Certification as a Nursing Assistant course or equivalent on the job training specific to the area for a minimum of three months. Maintains current CPR certification.
  • POPULATION BEING SERVED BY POSITION: Works with all age groups.
