Position: Pathologists’ Assistant

Location: Phoenix, AZ - Alternate weekly between Hospital Client Location and Main Laboratory

Type: Full-time, Monday – Friday, generally 40 hours/week with weekly shift rotation between 8:00a – 5p and 9:00 - 6:00p; no after-hours call plus 6 major holidays off.

General Summary

The Pathologists’ Assistant is responsible for routine and non-routine activities supporting the Pathologists with grossing, clerical and ancillary duties in preparation of blocks/slides for microscopic evaluation. All work efforts are performed to provide the best patient care in compliance with SOPs, federal and state laws, CLIA, and CAP. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:

Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision of a pathologist, independently perform or assist in accessioning, dissection, description, and histologic sampling of a full range of anatomic specimens.
  • Grossing of larger specimens requiring complex dissection skills.
  • Assist in tissue selection and staining for frozen sections.
  • Perform quality improvement and quality assurance activities.
  • Assist as required/requested in CAP inspection preparation.
  • Maintain records ofsurgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; assist in the preparation of pathology reports; label and store gross tissue specimens.
  • Performs gross photography as needed and assists with photomicrography for breast prognostic panel reports.
  • Aid in the timely selection of tissue for special procedures such as flow cytometry, chromosome analysis, and other procedures.
  • Prepares, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment & utensils, and instruments used in routine procedures, daily and weekly as required.
  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.
  • Responsible for Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) charts as required.
  • Adhere to laboratory's quality control policies, and document all quality control activities as required.
  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant program with PA(ASCP) certification/eligibility
  • Experience processing a broad spectrum of tissue types ranging from small biopsies to large, high complexity specimens
  • Commitment to teamwork and coordinated participation to meet organizational goals.

WPA is a CAP-accredited private group pathology practice founded in 1990. Our main laboratory is located adjacent to HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center. The practice consists of four board certified anatomic and clinical pathologists serving the HonorHealth network, various outpatient radiology practices, and private physicians’ offices in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
