Position Announcement
Part-Time Deputy Coroner

Hours: Nights (1630 to 0800), Weekends On-Call (0800 to 0800), and Holidays
Expectation: One weekend per month and one day per week at minimum, Holidays/year

Job Summary:
Under general supervision, investigates circumstances of deaths in the county, on behalf of the County Coroner, to determine the manner and cause and fix responsibility for accidental, violent, or unexplained deaths. Work is performed with considerable independence in accordance with Chapter 31 of the Illinois Revised Statutes, State and federal guidelines, and county policies and procedures, as well as from verbal and written instructions from the Lead Deputy Coroner and the County Coroner. Work involves documenting required information at the death scene, notifying family members, scheduling autopsies, and testifying at the Coroner"s inquest, as needed. Work is reviewed by the County Coroner for accuracy, neatness, thoroughness, and conformance to state laws and regulations.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Document required information at a scene of death
Notify family members of an individual"s death
Schedule autopsies, and testify at the Coroner"s inquest as needed

Minimum Qualifications:
Criminal justice and/or medical background
Medical or legal death investigator background
Understanding of Medical Terminology
Must have basic use of digital camera
2+ years of prior relevant experience
Heavy lifting required
Must be a resident of McLean County

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficient with computers
Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities
Experience resolving routine issues utilizing external resources and escalating internally when appropriate
Ability to communicate to others
