Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, an employee in this position will perform: daily and weekly routine cleaning, and periodic general cleaning and special cleaning; routine inspection of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and water softening systems including reporting of conditions and problems; cleaning and setting up for events, as well as clean up after events; opening and closing the building as needed for groups and events. Will respond to special requests from on-site staff, as needed.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, and seasonal position. The main work site is at Hemlock Crossing Nature Education Center in West Olive, MI, and the second location is at the Parks Operation Center in West Olive, MI. Possible travel to other county locations, as needed. Returning Park Custodian will receive $13.50 (2nd year), $13.75 (3rd year), and $14.00 (4th year).

Essential Job Functions

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides general labor required for the cleaning and maintaining of public areas, restrooms, hallways, kitchen areas, grills, and fireplace(s) in assigned facilities, including but not limited to washing windows, cleaning and refinishing floors, unplugging drains and toilets, changing light bulbs, snow and ice removal, and trash, recyclables, and litter collection.
  • Sets up and tears down meeting and conference rooms for specific uses and events.
  • Performs preventive maintenance for custodial equipment.
  • May provide landscape and grounds labor in the care of grounds, paved areas, and landscaping forms and features.
  • Maintains the work area in a neat, clean and safe condition and performs all work in accordance with established safety protocols and procedures.
  • Perform general periodic cleaning of NEC displays and other nature-oriented fixtures and objects. Perform special cleaning as needed for aquariums, animal cages, and other specialized nature-oriented amenities.
  • Make minor building repairs as needed to restroom fixtures, nature displays, office furniture, shelves, etc.
  • Open the building and monitor events for groups.
  • Performs other functions as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED combined with one (1) year of progressively responsible custodial experience.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Michigan Driver’s License preferred.

Additional Requirements and Information

The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:

  • Using proper chemicals and supplies to ensure the building is maintained to the high standards required of continued LEEDS certification and the Parks Commission’s subscribed high standards.
  • Reading proficiency to read and comprehend written instructions, labels on cleaning compounds, MSDS data sheets on other notices.
  • General mathematical skills to mix cleaning chemicals and compounds in proper proportions and calculate required quantities of replacement supplies.
  • Operating knowledge of carpet cleaning and floor care equipment and proper cleaning, stripping, and refinishing techniques.
  • Knowledge of safety and bloodborne protocols.
  • Commitment to providing quality service to the users of County facilities.
  • Ability to interact positively and constructively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and general public members with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to identify spills and stains requiring intensive cleaning and/or disinfecting.
  • Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level several times per day to remove litter and spot clean carpets.
  • Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level to dust file cabinets, light fixtures, and other features, fixtures, and furnishings.
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stepladders in order to access features and fixtures located at heights that cannot be reached while standing on the floor. May require the operation of equipment to reach heights over 20+ feet.
  • Must be able to operate power and manual floor and carpet cleaning equipment.
  • Must have sufficient strength to remove snow from walkways and other areas with manual shovels and snow blowers.
  • Must be able to lift and move supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to dirt, dust, mold, mildew, and human wastes, as well as inclement weather during snow season.
  • Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial cleaning products.
  • Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.

Working Conditions:
While performing this position's essential functions, the employee is frequently exposed to solvents, detergents, disinfectants; other cleaning compounds; mold, dust, dirt, human wastes, and inclement weather during snow season. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other disease vectors is also possible.
