Job Description
Under general supervision by the Parks Superintendent the Parks Crew Leader performs skilled maintenance and leads Parks Maintenance Worker crews by assigning, training, directing, monitoring, and inspecting all work. The purpose of this position is to preserve the appearance and upkeep of Town parks, medians, and facilities. This classification is distinguished from the Parks Maintenance Worker classification in that the work involves greater skill and independence and/or lead responsibility over a small crew. The Parks Crew Leader is distinguished from the next higher classification Parks Superintendent in that the latter is responsible for the supervision of parks employees and exercise a broad range of authority over the Parks Division.
Job Responsibilities
Job duties and responsibilities as outlined herein, are intended to be a representative of the typical tasks performed. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed.

Directs and leads the work of lower-level staff in assigned parks crew; meets daily with crew to discuss assigned projects and time allotted to complete projects and provide clear expectations
Meets with superintendent on a regular basis to provide progress reports of current and completed tasks and review upcoming projects
Provides feedback to employees regarding performance and contribute to annual performance reviews; works with superintendent to provide documentation as needed for disciplinary action as required by town policy
Operates a variety of motorized equipment such as a lawn mower, tractor with various attachments, top dresser, sod cutter, turf sweeper, paint sprayer, weed eater, edger, blower and other related maintenance and landscaping equipment; operate a variety of hand tools
Performs tasks related to maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, parklands, and other municipal grounds
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned; inspect equipment before use; complete daily operations report
Performs building maintenance on Town facilities
Assist with landscape installation, ball field renovation and preparation including weekend sport tournaments, community events and program preparation when needed
Assist with Irrigation repairs and maintains parks irrigation systems
Performs general landscape maintenance tasks including native, adaptive and drought tolerant landscapes
Explains Town policies and enforces safety regulations.
Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work team
Assists other Parks Crew Leaders when needed and adjust weekly schedule accordingly
Performs related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to: -
Provide technical and functional direction to crew members
Assist in the performance of landscape construction and maintenance
Operate tools and equipment safely
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather
Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair
Make accurate mathematic calculations
Understand, interpret, and apply all relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments
Demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships
Maintain records and files on work performed
Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing
Knowledge of: -
Leadership and training principles
Materials and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and installation of park fields, grounds, landscapes, and facilities
Methods and techniques of maintaining the safety of parks and playgrounds
Basic plant identification
Identifying plant diseases and their causes
Proper handling of fertilizers and pesticides
Practices and procedures used in turf management, irrigation, landscape construction, and pest control
Maintaining tools and equipment used in park maintenance
Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Occupational hazards and related safety precautions
Principles and procedures of recordkeeping
Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications
English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation
Physical Requirements
Incumbents typically work day-shift Monday through Friday and may be assigned overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules. Work both indoor and outdoor environments and may work in inclement weather. Work with machinery, around moving vehicles/objects; on slippery or uneven surfaces; exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substance and fumes, vibrations, noise; some work in or with water. Continuous sitting, standing, and walking for long periods of time; moderate and heavy lifting and carrying, up to 50 lbs.; climbing, kneeling, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling; must be able to operate assigned vehicle. Limited computer use may be required. Adhere to all safety guidelines and wear safety equipment where required. Need manual dexterity and visual activity. Minimum Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
High School Diploma or its equivalent
2-3 years in parks maintenance experience
One year of experience with chemical or spray applications
At time of appointment, a Texas Motor Vehicle Class C Operator's License with a satisfactory driving record maintained throughout employment.
Completion within six months of hire and maintained throughout employment a Texas Department of Agriculture Applicator License
Bilingual proficiency in Spanish preferred
