PARK RANGER CADET
Full Time non-exempt

Annual Salary - $40,229.87 - $48,904.14

United Water Conservation District (UWCD) is a special district that was founded in 1927. The District is responsible for the management, conservation, and enhancement of the water resources of the Santa Clara River Valley and the Oxnard Coastal Plain in Ventura County. District facilities include Santa Felicia Dam, Freeman Diversion facility, groundwater recharge basins, well fields, water treatment facilities and major transmission pipelines.

SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Chief Park Ranger, this position is assigned to the Recreation Division and performs a variety of public contact, performs basic labor and maintenance work related to the operation and maintenance of recreational facilities for public use; is responsible for patrolling large land areas and waterways at the Lake Piru Recreation Area and in the District’s jurisdiction, including the enforcement of ordinances, government codes, and state laws relating to the recreation area; provides operational support for the Recreation Area’s domestic water system; and performs other duties as assigned.

SOME DUTIES MAY INCLUDE

  • Patrol recreation areas.
  • Enforces United Water Conservation District ordinances related to the recreation area and performs the issuance of citations for misdemeanor and infraction violations of state law and County and District ordinances and regulations occurring on land owned or managed by United Water Conservation District including but not limited to boating regulations.
  • Responds to emergency situations; notifies the appropriate medical, law enforcement and/or fire response organizations; administers first-aid and CPR.
  • Prepares incident reports and daily shift logs.
  • Assists and provides information to park visitors.
  • Performs basic landscape maintenance duties under the direction of Park Ranger.
  • Performs minor irrigation repairs.
  • Assists with the application of herbicides and other materials used in weed control.
  • Maintains all park facilities, play equipment and pathways; inspects grounds and facilities for hazardous conditions and corrects or barricades the hazard and reports repairs.
  • Performs basic labor and maintenance tasks including painting, trenching and janitorial tasks.
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance on park vehicles, equipment and tools;
  • Prepares and maintains records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Removes litter, empties trash cans and maintains park areas in a clean manner.
  • May be called upon to advise and inspect the work of seasonal or part-time employees.
  • On a daily basis, assists in maintaining the domestic drinking water system by inspecting the on-site water treatment plant, obtaining chlorine residual readings and water samples, and recording results under the direction of a Park Ranger.
  • Coordinates with local law enforcement as needed.
  • May be required to appear and testify in court.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least one year experience in recreation park services, leisure services, law enforcement or closely related fields.
  • A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Parks and Recreation or related field is highly desirable.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Applicant must possess and maintain the following:
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License.
  • A valid certification in basic First Aid and CPR or have the ability to obtain one within 90 days of appointment.
  • Possession of PC 830/832 course certified by California POST required within one year of appointment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within one year a Department of Boating and Waterways certification in boating safety and enforcement.
