Parents as Teachers Parent Educator

General Summary:

The Pediatrics department at MGH Revere Healthcare Center is recruiting for a full-time team member who will work in the Parents as Teachers program.

Parents as Teachers is an evidence-based home visiting model, which is embedded within the Pediatric practice at MGH Revere. The Parents as Teachers Parent Educator is responsible for parent education to help parents understand their role in supporting their young child's development from the beginning. The program provides services to families with children between the ages of birth and kindergarten completion. The goals of the program include enhanced parent-child interactions, improved child health and development, and increased school readiness. This program includes visits with families at home and at the health center, screenings for parents and children served by the program, and connections to community resources in order to promote positive parent-child interactions, educate parents on developmental-centered parenting, and support overall family well-being. The position may include assistance with additional projects as assigned by the Unit Chief and/or Program Manager.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
  • Become knowledgeable about the Parents as Teachers model including the Essential Requirements necessary for model fidelity.
  • Conduct personal visits (60-75 minutes) using the Parents as Teachers curriculum on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with each family.
  • Plan the visit, gather materials, travel, conduct the visit, and clearly document the visit.
  • Provide parent group connections focusing on a minimum of one of the following areas of emphasis: parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, or family well-being.
  • Complete developmental, health, vision and hearing screenings on each child every year.
  • Complete screenings of substance use, domestic violence and depression with caregivers.
  • Work as part of a collaborative team which includes pediatricians, child development specialists, social workers, behavioral outreach worker, and program manager.
  • Develop and maintain a community resource network in order to be able to link families with them as needed.
  • Maintain and submit in a timely way all required family and program documentation.
  • Organize and inventory supplies/materials, etc.
  • Meet weekly with supervisor for reflective supervision sessions.
  • Help parents and children transition to other services as needed.
  • Complete annually required competency-based professional development hours in order to remain a certified Parents as Teachers parent educator (see Parents as Teachers Core Competencies for more details).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors or four-year degree in early childhood education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Supervised experience working with young children and families.
  • Knowledge of early childhood development.
  • Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish or Arabic).

Working Conditions:
  • Access to a car to travel to home visits.
  • Ability to get in and out of vehicles during travel to agencies and home visits.
  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to work and travel in different weather conditions.

  • Be able to learn, understand, and incorporate the three roles of a parent educator: partnering, facilitating, and reflecting into daily practice with families.
  • Be able to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.
  • Be competent with computer skills; including web browsing, e-mail, Internet, word-processing, and databases
