Job Purpose: The purpose of the Veterinary Technician Shift Lead is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to companion animal patients. The Veterinary Technician Shift Leads assists in leading the team on each shift, providing support, coaching and feedback to the team.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The Veterinary Technician Shift Lead position is one of the most important positions at ARISE. Veterinary Technician Shift Leads are responsible for managing the flow of the hospital, from providing technical training to coaching staff members to better their technical and interpersonal skills.
Job Requirements: Veterinary Technician Shift Leads support staff of Technician Assistants, Kennel Assistants, and Veterinary Technicians.
  • Ensures:
    • Policies and procedures are being followed
    • A team environment is being fostered
    • Positive and open communication is occurring Appropriate medical techniques are being utilized
    • Employees are demonstrating positive customer service to all clients
  • Provides feedback to the direct report if any corrective action or coaching is needed for any employee
  • Works with the Charge Nurses, Department Head and/or Medical Director to determine staffing levels from shift to shift.
  • Assist the Charge Nurses and/or Department Head in assigning staff roles per shift
  • Reassigns duties as needed per the needs of the shift
  • Asks for additional help when warranted based on the call-in guidelines
  • Sends staff home when not needed anymore
  • Participates in regular team meetings with Hospital Director and Clinic Manager to:
    • Identify areas for improvement within the company
    • Ensure consistent messages are being provided to employees
    • Increase knowledge of supervisory skills
  • Develop a cohesive team
    • Assists with the orienting and training of employees
    • Assists with the advancement of existing employees

  • Assists with monitoring Officers and hospital areas, and ensures compliance with duties. Notifies Technician Supervisor if proper policies are not being followed or duties not being completed
  • Surgery
    • Equipment is properly maintained, we do not run out of supplies
    • Packs properly cleaned

  • Radiology
    • Badges properly managed
    • Log is updated after each shift
    • Clean and supplied
  • Equipment
    • Broken equipment is properly addressed
    • Partner with the Equipment Specialist to ensure broken/damaged equipment is properly repaired/replaced
    • Team members using equipment appropriately at all times
  • Isolation
    • Kept clean and stocked
    • Equipment is properly maintained and functioning
  • Works with DAs to assist with auditing charts for missed charges and nursing notes are entered thoroughly, accurately, and properly.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending CEs, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal and professional networks, etc.
  • De-escalates upset patients and provides owner care
  • Demonstrate proficiency in (but not limited to):
    • Venipuncture
    • Managing patients in all phases of anesthetic procedures.
    • Appropriate handling of sample collection, as well as using and maintaining laboratory equipment.
    • Safely and effectively obtaining diagnostic radiographic images as well as assisting in non-radiographic imaging procedures.
    • Administration of medications, fluids, and blood products.
    • Knowledge of animal handling/restraint.
    • Wound and bandage management.
    • Knowledge of pre-operative surgical procedures and circulating duties.
    • All aspects of patient care, with particular regard to emergency and critical care patients.
    • Appropriate sterilization techniques.
  • This is a full-time position, must work a minimum of 32 hours a week, no less than 3 shifts per week, and could be expected to be available to help on all shifts if needed.
  • Meeting attendance and participation (Shift Lead and Hospital meetings) is required on a weekly basis. In addition, emergency meetings and workshop attendance is expected above weekly meetings.
  • Shift Lead position is an annual role with mandatory application and interview on a yearly basis.
