The Outrider is responsible for understanding the track in great detail, along with superb riding skills and keen senses. The Outrider is mounted and is responsible for making sure the race horses make it to the gate safely.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Outrider is responsible for understanding the track in great detail, along with superb riding skills and keen senses. The Outrider is mounted and is responsible for making sure the race horses make it to the gate safely.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for leading race horses to the starting gates and keeping things orderly during the procession
- Work closely with trainers and drivers to ensure everyone gets around safely
- Encouraged to use their own mount to ensure comfortability in the saddle and be able to turn their attention elsewhere
- Possesses a calm demeanor, physical strength and a tireless attitude to be a successful Outrider
- Basic rule enforcement for races
- Chasing down runaway horses
- Chasing down any early starters
- Sounding the alarm to notify rider injury
- Opening and closing the track at the beginning and end of the day
- Coordinating with track personnel
- Adhere to all corporate and local policies, procedures and operating guidelines
- Demonstrate abilities to meet performance expectations with communication, initiative, problem solving, customer service/interpersonal relations, work habits, conduct and responsible gaming/business ethics
- Other duties as assigned
Skills/Requirements
- This position does not require any formal education
- Must have knowledge of Minnesota Racing Rules and Procedures
- Must be able to stand, sit and walk for long periods of time
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions
- Must possess sound judgment and the ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as well as to gain the cooperation of guests and fellow team members
- This position must have, or an ability to acquire within one year, an in-depth knowledge and thorough understanding of company policy and procedures, state regulations, and technical rules relevant to their responsibilities
- Extensive experience working with horses
- Must possess the ability to obtain a Minnesota Racing Commission racing license
Physical, intellectual and environmental conditions:
- Ability to work flexible shifts and days of the week including night, weekends and holidays
- Ability to handle frequent walking, standing and sitting
- Must be able to work flexible shifts in a crowded noisy environment
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions
- Must be comfortable working with and riding horses
