Project Description:
The National Zoning Atlas, online at
www.zoningatlas.org
, is a project of the Legal Constructs Lab at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning to create a national database documenting the zoning codes of every jurisdiction across the country. This project aims to depict key aspects of zoning codes in an online, user-friendly map and provide a consistent platform for research teams to add and update information on each zoning district as data is collected.
Position Description
The Legal Constructs Lab invites applications for an outreach coordinator position beginning as soon as January 3, 2023, or as soon as the position is filled. The successful candidate will serve as the outreach coordinator for the National Zoning Atlas, working under the supervision of Project Coordinator (Zoning Code Analysis), and will be responsible for assisting the Project Coordinator with the public outreach and research associated with the NZA project.
More specifically, duties will include:
  • Giving and developing presentations, interviews, and webinars about the National Zoning Atlas
  • Identifying and soliciting third parties to participate in data provision, publicity, and research assistance
  • Updating the project website
  • Maintaining the social media presence
  • Developing a system for public reporting on progress, including a standard reporting template
  • Guiding the work of students assisting with research
  • Contributing to written publications
There will be no formal teaching responsibilities associated with this position, but the successful candidate may participate in seminars or specialized portions of courses related to this effort.
Work Location and Term of Position
This full-time position is expected to be conducted remotely within the United States, but the successful applicant must be available between the business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
The initial appointment term is two years with possible extension depending on funding and satisfactory performance.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants must have an expertise in and knowledge of land use issues; familiarity with research methods relevant to land use issues; a track record of public presentations and media liaisons; and the proven ability to effectively interact and communicate with academics, planning authorities, undergraduate and graduate students, and the public. Candidates who possess a desire to work in a dynamic environment on a complex data collection research project, have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and embrace a team-oriented approach are most likely to succeed in this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strongly preferred: A masters or Ph.D. in planning, geography, the social sciences, GIS, urban design, architecture, or related fields or a JD. Two years’ experience in reading, reviewing, researching, or administering U.S. zoning codes. Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate research interns or teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Experience with various database and record-keeping methods. Experience drafting or contributing to successful grant applications.
