The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC), is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW (Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases Grant (ELC))

The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD), part of the Division of Disease Control, is composed of seven units/programs which are responsible for monitoring and investigating 73 infectious diseases including foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, zoonotic, and antibiotic-resistant infections. The Bureau also monitors and analyzes trends in disease data and provides consultation to the medical community and the public on the recognition, prevention, and control of communicable diseases.


POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking to fill one position in the Antibiotic Resistance Prevention Unit (ARU) on the One Health Team. One Health is a collaborative approach to attain optimal health for humans, animals, and the environment. The One Health Team in the ARU is new and there is great capacity for growth. We seek an enthusiastic individual who will provide epidemiologic and analytical support for initiatives related to surveillance of antibiotic-resistant infections at the human-animal-environmental interface, as well as one health related antibiotic stewardship efforts and infection prevention and control activities in New York City. It is expected that the Antibiotic Resistance Epidemiologist/Analyst (One Health Analyst) will work 35 hours per week.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the lead One Health analyst for the ARU in NYC. Primary responsibilities include helping to establish reportable disease surveillance system for multidrug resistant organisms collected and cultured from companion animals; managing and analyzing companion animal antimicrobial susceptibility data; and helping to create a regional antibiogram.
  • Support for planning, data collection, and analysis of veterinary antimicrobial stewardship needs assessment including working with both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Engage with internal and external partners to build and develop One Health antimicrobial stewardship resources and tools for the NYC veterinary community.
  • Participate in CDC and DOHMH trainings and webinars to improve subject matter expertise, and to expand technical knowledge and skills in data analysis and scientific communication.
  • Act as analytical support as needed for various antibiotic resistance/infection prevention and control projects in the ARU, including surveillance of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and analysis of antimicrobial use data.
  • Assist with core ARU duties and data needs such as CRE case investigations, data quality assurance activities, whole genome sequencing efforts, etc.
  • Present results of data analyses to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Other tasks may include supporting the Surveillance and Epidemiology (SurvEpi) Emergency Response Group while the DOHMH Incident Command System is activated for NYC emergencies (e.g., COVID-19, Monkeypox).


  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and two years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.


PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience and demonstrated excellence in data analysis including the use of Statistical Analysis Software (SAS), SQL, and or R software.
  • Interest and experience working in One Health and working at the human, animal, environmental interface.
  • Proficiency in navigating computer systems; ability to learn new data systems quickly and to comply with data integrity and security to safeguard all personal identifiable information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic backgrounds required.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Critical thinking and sound judgment required.
  • Ability to coordinate remotely with colleagues required.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English required.
  • Ability to demonstrate a professional, positive attitude, and work ethic.
  • Flexibility for when plans or situations change as well as the ability to make decisions in the face of uncertainty or limited data.

LOCATION

The staff person hired for this position will work remotely but must live within commuting distance of New York City. All necessary equipment and access to a remote virtual connection to the NYC DOHMH network will be provided. You must provide your own internet connection as well as have a quiet, distraction-free work environment without any conflicting responsibilities during your scheduled work shift. This position could move on-site to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Gotham Center, 42-09 28th Street, Queens, NY 11101 at a later date.


SALARY AND BENEFITS

FPHNYC offers a comprehensive benefits package. The salary range is $97,138 - $111,003 and is commensurate with experience.
