GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Nurse Manager plans, organizes and directs the activities of an assigned patient unit on a 24-hour basis. Assures the provision of patient care, maintains a safe and therapeutic environment and coordinates activities of the unit with medical staff and other departments. Provides direction, education and leadership to all nursing personnel for an assigned patient care unit.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. In consultation with the Director of Nursing or CNO, Patient Care Services develops short and long-range goals and objectives for areas of responsibility.

2. Develops plans to accomplish goals which include recommendations for personnel, equipment and supplies necessary for achievement of stated goals.

3. Patient Care: Plans for and supervises the delivery of care to all patients admitted to the unit.

A. Develops and implements standards of patient care.

B. Assures the development of a patient care plan for each patient.

C. Provides for the assignment of personnel based on patient needs and staff preparation and availability.

D. Observes and evaluates nursing care provided by making frequent patient rounds, conferences with medical staff, and regular review of nursing documentation.

E. Serves as a role model and a resource to staff for complex patient care problems.

4. Management Responsibilities:

A. Responsible for hiring and maintenance of discipline consistent with organizational policy and contractual agreements.

B. Schedules staff to provide safe, quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis.

C. Evaluates individual work performances through direct observation of care provided, discussion with patients and review of documentation.

D. Directly supervises the Nursing Supervisor, Staff Nurses and ancillary personnel.

E. Assists with preparation of unit budget and exercises budget control by monitoring the utilization of personnel and supplies.

F. Assures that assigned personnel are prepared to function safely and effectively.

G. Works with other hospital departments to resolve problems and coordinate services to the unit.

H. Adjusts staffing based on changes in patient census, patient acuity, and unit of service (NHPPD) goals.

I. Conducts regular unit meetings to discuss patient care needs and unit operations.

5. Administration:

A. Serves on assigned Divisional, Administrative and Patient Care Committees.

B. Conducts ongoing quality assurance programs for assigned area.

6. Assumes responsibility for special projects as assigned.

7. Performs other related duties as assigned and as judgment and necessity dictate.

SUPERVISION:

Reports to the Director of Nursing, Chief Nursing Officer. Supervises a staff comprised of Nursing Supervisor, Staff Nurses, LPN’s, Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Undergraduate Nurse Externs, Unit Secretaries and other support personnel assigned to the area.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. MINIMUM EDUCATION: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Michigan. BSN required. MSN preferred.

2. MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Three (3) to five (5) years current staff nurse experience with at least one (1) year in the area of specialty required. One (1) year current leadership experience as Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse.

3. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Demonstrated interpersonal communication abilities required interacting with the public and all levels of the hospital staff. Expected to float or be pulled to any other area as needed.

4. ANALYTICAL DEMANDS: Performs duties as assigned and as judgment and necessity dictate.

5. CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE: Registered Nurse License in the State of Michigan. Certification in specialty preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Long periods of standing and walking.

2. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in a well-lighted and well-ventilated environment.

3. EQUIPMENT USED: Medical/office equipment necessary to perform specific tasks/duties.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
