POSITION

Two Natural Resources Technician positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Tyndall Air Force Base (AFB), Florida. Technicians will gain exposure to careers in military land management and will be mentored by Tyndall AFB natural resource managers.

Technicians will contribute Tyndall AFB’s outdoor recreation and protected species conservation efforts. Specific duties include:

  • Hunter Check Station operation – permit sales, customer service, checking hunters in/out of tree stands, collecting biological data from harvested white-tailed deer (e.g., sex, antler measurements, weight, jaw bone removal), data entry, and interacting with the public.

- Check Station hours are typically 04:30AM-7:00PM Friday through Sunday. Shifts are approximately 7 hours long and will be split amongst multiple employees. Shift scheduling will be determined upon hiring.

  • Perform gopher tortoise and beach mouse surveys and prepare for the sea turtle nesting season.
  • Assist with maintenance of recreational area access roads.

Positions are entry-level, seasonal (fall 2021 through winter 2022), and full-time hourly (40 hours/week). On- the-job training and all equipment necessary to perform job duties will be provided. Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

Position Duty Station: Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida

Tyndall AFB is a 30,000-acre United States military installation based on a peninsula along the Gulf of Mexico. Over 23,350 acres of this land is undeveloped, which provides unique opportunities for sea-to-land airspace training and operations. From September to April each year, the Tyndall Outdoor Recreational

Program provides hunting opportunities throughout the undeveloped areas of the installation. Archery, muzzle loading gun, and general gun hunting is allowed. Target species for hunting include doves, deer, alligators, waterfowl, and other game animals that are present on the base. The Outdoor Recreational Program is essential in managing the land throughout the base and creating unique opportunities for hunting, protected species conservation, and community engagement. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Must be comfortable interacting with the public while representing Tyndall AFB in a professional manner.
  • Must be comfortable collecting biological data from harvested game animals and accurately entering data into a record keeping system.
  • Must be punctual and available to work weekends (Friday-Sunday) and federal holidays (excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year ’s Day).
  • Physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations under varying weather conditions. Field activities will include conducting surveys, maintaining monitoring equipment, and using hand tools. These actions require frequent walking, lifting, pulling, and kneeling.
  • Ability to follow instruction and to work both independently and on a team.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles, including trucks and UTVs.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Common Card.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in a natural resources management, wildlife and fisheries science, forestry, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys.
  • Experience using and maintaining outdoor equipment (e.g., weed whackers).
  • Experience with GIS and GPS equipment.

PAY RATE

Pay rate is $16/hour and the work period will not exceed 110 working days. Weekend (Friday-Sunday) and federal holiday (excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s day) availability is required.
