Position Title: Natural Resource specialist

Duration: 12 Month Fellowship (52 weeks): Starting Spring 2023 (dates are dependent upon the start date)

Location: Mendocino National Forest 825 N. Humboldt Ave Willows, CA 95988

Description of Position:
The position is located within the US Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region on the Mendocino National Forest. The Resource Assistant (RA) will participate in the recreation program assisting forest staff with Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant administration, special uses administration, recreation site maintenance, recreation utilization analysis, wilderness and trails management/maintenance, and youth engagement programs.

Major duties could include:
  • Maintaining files for OHV billing, documenting expenditures, assisting with payment request, and tracking expenditures to ensure the project remains within budget.
  • Working with complex Excel spreadsheets and databases.
  • Conducting inspections for recreation residence, drafting correspondence, and maintaining files and other administrative support.
  • Developing knowledge on Forest Service regulations and policies.
  • Reviewing, inspecting, and analyzing permit process related to natural resource management
  • Providing excellent customer service to private landowners and businesses.
  • Conducting recreation site maintenance at campgrounds, day use sites, trail heads, and group sites. Assisting with recreation utilization analysis by conducting field visits and documenting findings.
  • Conducting wilderness solitude monitoring, recreation site monitoring and minor trail maintenance.
  • Assisting district staff with YCC project oversight.
  • Assisting with National Visitor Use Monitoring

Physical Demands:
Driving on, and navigating National Forest Service roads, hiking, this can also include physical work requiring participants to be able to lift and carry approx. 50 pounds (lifting trash bags into the back of a truck, assisting with sign installation and general site maintenance); may require working outdoors with exposure to the elements, including full sun (Highs up to 105-degree F). Extreme weather/temperatures may be mitigated by scheduling outdoor activities early/late in the day to avoid extremes.

Work Environment:
Administrative work in the office as well as field going

Education Requirements/Preferences:
Four-year college degree in an appropriate field of study

Minimum Qualifications:
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Ages 18 and up
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 12 months

Stipend + Benefits:
  • $650 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
  • $1,000 monthly housing stipend
  • $50 monthly commuting stipend (if in-person)
  • Option for health insurance coverage during full term
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours, DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.

About Us:
The Mendocino National Forest (MNF) is composed of 913,306 acres and is located north of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is the only National Forest in California that is not crossed by a paved road or highway. The land rises from 750 feet in the Sacramento Valley foothills on the Forest’s eastern edge to over 8,000 feet of the Yolla Bolly Mountains in the northern part of the forest. The forest has rich history of human habitation, from the five Native American peoples (the Yuki, Nomlaki Wintu, Patwin Wintu, Eastern Pomo, and Northeastern Pomo) who continue to partner with the Forest Service. The MNF is visited for a wide range of interests including the tranquility of remote Wilderness and nearly 300 miles of off-highway vehicle trails and roads traversing through the beautiful scenery and challenging terrain. Wilderness and Wild Scenic River uses, Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, off-highway vehicle use, hiking, camping, fishing, and mountain biking, are popular activities with visitors. The MNF is truly a beautiful forest and one of numerous uses, including timber management, livestock grazing, special uses, and a robust recreation program of motorized and nonmotorized activities.

Willows, CA, is located north of Sacramento, CA and less than an hour’s drive west of Chico, CA. Willows offers the serenity of small community while only being a short jaunt to the city by neighboring the i-5 corridor. Situated within a rich agricultural rural setting, Willows has Thunderhill Raceway which is the venue for the longest automobile race in the United States. The population of Willows and surrounding communities (Glenn County) is about 30,000 people, with a median home price of $233,200. Apartment/house rentals average at approximately $835 monthly. The school district goal is to always provide better educational opportunities for students including a great Future Farmers of America (FFA) program, athletics, music, and lot more. The renowned Chico state campus, and exceptional Butte Community college is located under an hour’s drive as well. Along with a general medical and surgical hospital facility, the city is home to regional government offices including California Highway Patrol and California Department of Motor Vehicles.

The average rainfall is about 24 inches. Summers range from 80 - 100 degrees. Approximately 45-60 minutes commuting distance from Willows are the communities of Chico, Durham, Maxwell, Orland, Corning, Red Bluff, Oroville, and Yuba City. The town of Redding is a little over an hour drive North and the state capitol of Sacramento is just over an hour drive South.
