Your New Role
Our work is meaningful. You’ll be supporting an agency completing critical forestry work across the state. Oregon is proud of its forests, and our staff are proud of the work we accomplish to protect, manage, and promote forest stewardship.
As the Small Forestland Owner Forester you will administer the Forest Practices Act and rules, assist small landowners in obtaining their objectives and providing for the societal values of the citizens of this state by offering information and assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources. This is accomplished with statues, rules, programs and policies that relate to: forest practices; tax credits; cost share and grant funding; fire protection; integrated pest management; resource protection; voluntary measures in the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds; and best management practices to maintain water quality.
This position will be located at the District Offices across the State and will work closely with the Small Forest Landowner Office in Salem providing on-the-ground and administrative process coordination and leadership to small landowners and projects.
As the Stewardship Forester you will administer the Forest Practices Act and rules; assist landowners in obtaining their objectives and providing for the societal values of the citizens of this state by offering information and assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources.
This is accomplished with statues, rules, programs and policies that relate to: forest practices; reforestation tax credits; cost share and grant funding; fire protection; the Forest Resource Trust; integrated pest management; resource protection; voluntary measures in the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds; and best management practices to maintain water quality. In addition, district employees serve in support of the Protection from Fire Program during fire and other emergency incidents and assist in forest fire prevention efforts in the district by conducting training sessions and encouraging good forest management practices by participating in the programs of hazard management set forth in Oregon law and to the extent authorized and directed by the State Forester.

Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of experience in Forestry and any natural resource program area and
  • A Bachelor's degree in Forestry and any natural resource program area, or
  • Three additional years of related (pertinent) experience;
OR
One year of experience in Forestry and any natural resource program area, and a Master's degree in Forestry and any natural resource program area.
OR
a Doctorate degree in Forestry and any natural resource program area.

Requested Skills:
  • Basic Forestry Skills
  • Knowledgeable on woodland practices, timber harvesting, regeneration, fire prevention.
  • Experience with Management planning.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and perform work safely and effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Must have interpersonal skills including ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with land owners, operators, contractors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Skill writing clear and concise reports that include recommendations and conclusions.
