Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of the position is to assist the National Register Coordinator in the administration of the National Register of Historic Places program for the State of North Carolina.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Preparing National Register nomination notification mailings and processing.
  • Process Study List Applications and prepare Study List approval letters.
  • Managing National Register and Study List files and databases.
  • Overseeing preparations for National Register Advisory Committee and National Register staff review meetings.
  • Responding to requests for National Register program-related information from the public, HPO staff, and cultural resource management consultants.
  • Processing National Register nominations. This work includes:
    • Review of completed National Register nominations for technical accuracy and UTMs, coordinates proper labeling of CDs, printed photos, and maps.
    • Making necessary changes in consultation with National Register staff.
    • Copying nominations and exhibits onto archival paper.
    • Transmitting nominations to the National Park Service.
  • Cataloging architectural survey and other publications for the HPO library.
  • Conducting HPO website updates for Survey and National Register staff, such as posting recent National Register listings to the HPO website.
As the official state agency for historic preservation in North Carolina, the Historic Preservation Office (HPO) identifies, protects, and enhances North Carolina's historic properties and districts through a coordinated statewide program of incentives, information and technical assistance for public agencies, private organizations, and the state's citizens. Section programs include: processing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places; comprehensive architectural surveys for counties and municipalities; technical assistance for the care and treatment of historic buildings; technical assistance and training for 105 local historic preservation commissions statewide; management of a federal pass-through grant program for the federal Certified Local Government (CLG) program; and environmental review of development projects that may affect historic properties and archaeological resources. It functions as the state clearinghouse for federal and state protection and incentive programs for properties that qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. The position is located in the main office in downtown Raleigh close to museums and restaurants, with staff also stationed in field offices in Greenville and Asheville.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Access, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the public.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing time and meetings.
  • Must be able to travel on occasion to conduct site visits to historic properties.
  • Must have a valid NC driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Management preferences:
  • Familiarity with the structure and operation of national and state preservation programs.
  • Ability to comprehend technical language and concepts.
  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities/liberal arts program.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
