CLASS TITLE: Motor Equipment Operator I – Landfill

DEFINITION:

An employee in this class will be under the supervision of the superintendent and the Director of Solid
Waste Management. Duties may include but not be limited to the operation of landfill rolling equipment, the roll-off container truck, dump body trucks, cube truck, all landfill track equipment and to load and haul dirt from the County owned borrow pit using an excavator and a tandem dump truck. A working knowledge of borrow- pit operations and landfill operations and procedures would be beneficial.
Secondary duties may include pickup of recyclables from the transfer stations twice per week, pickup of
Smith Island waste from the County dock in Crisfield, supervision of an inmate work crew at the landfill and other duties as needed. Operator would also have to spot trucks for unloading. Operator would be required to work in all weather conditions under minimum supervision. The employee should have the ability to carry out detailed instructions. Some weekends required. Operator will also be required to do weekly preventative maintenance and submit reports on such maintenance activities.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Examples are illustrative only)

• Operate tracked vehicle over 10 tons, tandem dump trucks, tracked front- end load, and, when necessary, a wheeled trash compactor over 10 tons.
• Digging and loading dirt for hauling to the landfill.
• Maintaining properly graded slopes at the borrow pit.
• Seeding and fertilizing property at the pit and landfill.
• Maintaining and using water pumps at the borrow pit. Operate steel wheeled trash compactor at the landfill working face
• Grade roads, push and grade dirt over trash with a bulldozer
• When working in the borrow pit using a track type excavator, the operator would be responsible for digging and loading dirt onto dump truck for hauling to the landfill
• Perform all operations associated with landfill waste using a track type loader and bulldozer and landfill compactor.
• Operator will, on a rotating basis, be required to work at the landfill working face pushing; compacting and covering trash using track type equipment and a landfill compactor.
• Operator will also be required to perform preventative truck and equipment maintenance and submit reports of same.
• Operate a cube truck to pickup waste materials throughout the County.
• Supervise and work with a two to four man inmate crew to pick up paper, cut grass and perform other duties.
• Operate a roll-off container truck
• Operate all off-road landfill heavy equipment
• Perform other duties as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Three years of accident free experience with trucks, loaders and other types of landfill rolling equipment.
• Ability to operate tracked excavator, tracked front-end loader, tandem dump truck and landfill compactor.
• Ability to conduct routine daily preventative maintenance on rolling equipment.
• Ability to operate wheeled and track type vehicles.
• Ability to operate vehicles using pedal operated clutch and nine-speed non-synchromesh transmission.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND EDUCATION:

• Completion of 8th school grade.
• Ability to read and write English.
• Three years of accident free experience with trucks, loaders, and other types of landfill rolling equipment.
• Should be able to conduct routine daily maintenance on rolling equipment.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

• Valid CDL License
