POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Medical Specialist 2 is a licensed, Board-Certified physician solely qualified to practice medicine in the state of New York. This Medical Specialist 2 would be joining the medical services department of Taconic DDSOO as a key clinician in meeting the health and safety needs of the individuals served. The Taconic district provides services to over 300 individuals with ID/DD, many of whom are advanced in age and have complex medical issues and physical challenges. The district spans five counties including Greene, Columbia, Ulster, Dutchess, and Putnam. The Med Spec 2 will help to maintain adequate availability of medical services and professional clinical guidance, needed 24/7, 365 days a year, across the district. Particular demand is in the northern area of the district, serving Ulster, Columbia, and Greene counties, where it is difficult to recruit. Two IRAs in Columbia county support individuals who have advanced medical needs requiring frequent monitoring, follow-up and documentation for their health and safety. This clinician will work collaboratively with the 2 physicians on staff, supervise the PA based in Ulster county, and work closely with the Nursing Director, Infection Control NA1, nursing department, hospital liaison, and other interdisciplinary team members. The incumbent will be supervised by Taconic's Medical Director.

PPOSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Ø Reviews medical history of patients referred for treatment

o Confers with referring physician and other medical practitioners about the patient

o Assures that referrals are in order and consistent with the patient’s history and possible or confirmed diagnosis

o Reviews medical records, including the results of prior examinations and tests

o Participates in case reviews

Ø Conducts medical examinations of patients

o Clarifies information in medical history with patient

o Discusses patient condition, treatment, and prognosis with family members and caregivers and answers their questions

o May refer patients to community physicians and health facilities

Ø Reviews patients for DNR

Ø Will travel to local hospitals, nursing homes and/or SOIRAs in order to complete OPWDD checklist for DNR proceedings for OPWDD individuals

Ø Develops, implements, and reviews training programs for staff

Ø Participates in weekly Behavioral Review Committee Meeting

Ø Participates in weekly 2ndStep Eligibility Reviews

Ø Develops and administers procedures and policies for the medical specialty treatment program, facilities, and staff and assures that staff comply with them

Ø Reviews and approves medical staff schedules

Ø On-Call duties

Ø Periodically backup the Medical Director, in their absence

NOTE: Travel within the five-county catchment area will be required in the performance of the duties of the position. This may include a state-owned vehicle, as available, or the employee’s own car. An employee who uses his/her own car will be reimbursed at current negotiated rates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Transfer: Candidates must currently be a permanent Medical Specialist 2

OR

Open Competitive:

  • Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State AND
  • Possession of a M.D., M.B.B.S. or D.O. degree; AND
  • Certification by the appropriate American Specialty Board; AND
  • Eligibility for full and unconditional participation in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
