Medical Interpreter

Monday-Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm
Full-time (40/hour per week)

Location: Knoxville, TN

Cherokee Health Systems is a Federally Qualified Health Center located throughout Tennessee. We currently have 24 locations including Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis, and surrounding areas. Cherokee embraces an integrated care model of care where primary care and behavioral health providers support each other in providing the highest quality of care to our patients.

At Cherokee Health Systems we also know that our staff needs balance in their work and life. This position offers a set Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. work schedule to allow our employees, family and friends time in the evenings and on the weekends.

Summary: To effectively facilitate understanding in communications between people who speak different languages in a health care facility. Hybrid work could be possible if performance allows it.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • To interpret between a wide range of people with diverse voices, accents, speaking tempos and personalities.
  • To interpret during various processes, for different staff across the different clinics.
  • Interpretation may happen in person, over the phone or through videocalls.
  • To translate written materials for the Limited English Proficiency patients, family members, and significant others.
  • To assist by interpreting consent forms and any other patient related information.
  • The interpreter must honor the Code of Ethics as per the IMIA and the NCICH. This includes but it’s not limited too
  • The Interpreter will honor HIPAA and shall keep all patient information confidential and will not disclose to anyone any information learned during the performances of their duties.
  • o The Interpreter shall interpret everything the speaker says without changing the meaning and does not make any additions, deletions, or alterations to how or what is said.
  • o The Interpreter shall introduce themselves to all parties and explain their role.
  • o The Interpreter must avoid getting personally involved with the people for whom they are interpret and keep relationship with patient on a professional level at all time.
  • Assist with patient referrals

Skills:

  • Must have the ability to read, write and converse fluently in Spanish and English.
  • Must possess excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to interact with patients of all cultural diversities, all ages, all levels of literacy and health literacy.
  • Good phone and customer services skills.
  • Good teamwork.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Work Processing software, Electronic Medical Records software, and Spreadsheet design software.
  • Akateko, Kanjobal or Chuj proficiency would be considered a plus.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. One-year experience as an interpreter in a medical clinic setting preferred. Ability to demonstrate fluency through evaluation.

Assessment administered by CHS Language Services vendor is required.
