Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician - Hemodialysis - performs assignments in the hemodialysis unit as a member of the healthcare team. Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, they are responsible for providing direct and/or indirect patient care to an assigned group of chronic hemodialysis patients. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Serves as an active member of the healthcare team with professional and supportive personnel;
  • Sterilizes all types of dialysis delivery machines used in the hemodialysis unit and tests equipment for accuracy and malfunctions;
  • Tests equipment for residual sterility prior to patient use;
  • Works with higher grade technician in effecting major repairs of a more critical nature such as replacement of pumps, gauges, pressure regulator, motors and printed circuit boards;
  • Prepares dialysate solution used for hemodialysis and ensures that each patient receives the proper solution;
  • Uses conductivity meters and osmometers to check solution for accuracy in ionic concentration. Informs supervisor of any imminent problems;
  • Transports machinery and dialyzers to all areas where they are to be used and has machine running and dialyzer connected prior to patient's arrival;
  • Prepares dialyzers using sterile technique by flushing blood compartment with sterile saline and dialysate compartment with dialysate fluid;
  • Cooperates with higher grade technician to perform overlapping duties, such as ordering of equipment and solutions as well as the rotation of stock while maintaining adequate levels at all times; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Providence VA Healthcare System is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of working evenings, nights and weekends does exist. Shift changes will be considered based on patient and facility needs. Tour of duty will be four, 10-hour shifts (6:00am-4:30pm), and every other weekend will be required.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
a. Citizenship. Citizenship of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
c. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. VA HANDBOOK 5005/15 MARCH 17, 2006 PART II APPENDIX G27 II-G27-2 For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable.

GS-8 Requirements (Full Performance Level)
(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the more complex procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • 1. Knowledge of the hemodialysis process and equipment needed for home/self care including knowledge of common machine problems and repairs to such equipment.
  • 2. Knowledge of the equipment and procedures for peritoneal dialysis.
  • 3. Ability to assist the physician with percutaneous renal biopsies and peritoneal catheter insertion.
  • 4. Ability to provide instruction to dialysis patients in home/self care and in the maintenance of the equipment.
  • 5. Ability to provide instruction for physicians, nurses, and other personnel in dialysis procedures, equipment operation and maintenance, etc.
(c) Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.

Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. Providence VAMC is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, mental health, and geriatric inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with visits to the Emergency Department and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 35lbs. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent must be able to navigate all areas of the facility.
