POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Director will further the mission of Roundup River Ranch by developing and implementing appropriate medical management protocols that will ensure the safety, health, and well-being of all participants. Working in collaboration with the Nursing Director to lead the medical program, the Medical Director also serves as the staff liaison to Camp’s Medical Advisory Committee and to the SeriousFun Network Medical Advisory Committee and works closely with teams throughout the organization. This position is primarily administrative in nature and requires medical knowledge and judgement of complex medical management strategies, including the clinical review of camper applications and files. Pediatric sub-specialty training is not required however consultation and coordination with sub-specialty providers is anticipated. When camp is in-session, the Medical Director oversees and directs all aspects of the medical care of campers. The Medical Director will be required to maintain current pediatric clinical skills through regular, external clinical opportunities throughout the year.

This position must have the ability to flex between residential and on-call availability based on camper care needs, medical volunteer scheduling, and emergent needs while balancing personal clinical practice needs. This position is required to be on-site regularly during camp sessions and activities, including regular business needs, trainings, arrival days, fundraisers, in-person camper reunions, and similar activities to support the medical programming and camp activities overall.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

MEDICAL CARE AND RECRUITMENT

  • Review camper applications and ensure the coordination of camper’s medical needs during their time at camp by collaborating with all applicable departments and referring providers.
  • Provide for the general health and well-being of all campers, and for staff and volunteers as appropriate, by providing medical oversight and support to medical volunteers.
  • Oversee the medical center, in collaboration with the Nursing Director, ensuring that appropriate equipment and supplies are available and maintained; medical records are updated and maintained, and the facility is in good repair and functions to meet camper, volunteer, and staff needs
  • Ensure the security of all medications and the safety of medication supply and distribution.
  • Build relationships with camper families and referring medical teams to ensure open communication and a team approach to referrals and care.
  • Identify, create, develop, and maintain effective partnerships with hospitals, volunteer health organizations, clinics, and other related organizations.

ADMINISTRATION AND COMPLIANCE

  • Proactively take the steps necessary to maintain full medical compliance and meet medical licensing requirements for the camp and its staff.
  • Ensure compliance and best practice with Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, Colorado Department of Human Services, Eagle County, SeriousFun Children’s Network criteria, American Camp Association standards, and similar regulatory and oversight organizations.
  • Develop, update annually, and implement all camp medical policies and procedures, including crisis and emergency management protocols. This includes overseeing an annual feedback and input process with volunteers and the Medical Advisory Committee as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with Nursing Director, Admissions Department, and Human Resources to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and support medical volunteers and seasonal staff.
  • Assist with development of the medical department budget and ensure that all expenses are managed within the budget.
  • Represent Roundup River Ranch medical best practices and collaborate with the SeriousFun Children’s Network.

OTHER

  • This position is required to maintain active pediatric clinical skills through ongoing practice in an external pediatric clinical setting throughout the year.
  • The Medical Director cultivates and stewards new and existing strategic medical partnerships, in close collaboration with development staff and the Medical Advisory Committee.
  • Attend Development events including annual fundraisers, cultivation events, and other opportunities to raise awareness for Roundup River Ranch, building and strengthening external contacts and collaborations that benefit campers.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality in all aspects of role, including all medical information and records.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

  • Ability to prioritize quickly and work within deadlines
  • Must be comfortable using, and teaching others how to use, general medical equipment including, but not limited to, AEDs, IV pumps, resuscitation equipment, etc.
  • Must be comfortable using a computer including navigating camper database, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) with current Colorado license with minimum 5 years post-residency clinical experience in pediatric care and/or family practice experience
  • Minimum 2 years management or leadership experience
  • Current appropriate certifications (or ability to obtain certification upon hire) are required to support emergency pediatric and adult care- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Active and ongoing clinical experience required, with a minimum of 120 hours a year, to maintain and develop skills needed to address camper medical needs
  • Residential summer camp experience in a medical role is preferred.

Special Conditions: This is a full-time year-round position with significant time demands during the camp season. The Medical Director is expected to be residential at the camp in Gypsum, CO when the camp is in session. The year-round office is also located at the campsite in Gypsum, CO, and the Medical Director is not required to be residential when camp is not in session.

Roundup River Ranch believes in wellness and work-life balance. The Medical Director will be scheduled for one or more nights off during camp sessions and time off in between camp sessions. During this scheduled time-off, this position is encouraged to leave site and enjoy time off, however, please note that when campers are on site, this position may be called back in the rare event of an emergent need.
