JOB TITLE:

Master Technician/Field Engineer

JOB PURPOSE:

This Master Technician/Field Engineer position with the University of Wyoming’s Atmospheric Science Department is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to join an internationally regarded research and instrument development team. Using their technical talents, they will support the design, testing and deployment of scientific research instrumentation including lidar, radar and in-situ instruments along with infrastructure to support the installations. These instruments are utilized on the Department’s King Air research aircraft, mobile air chemistry facilities and/or laboratory platforms for purposes of atmospheric and environmental research.

This multi-faceted position will require the use of expert knowledge to perform complex-level research, design, fabrication and troubleshooting of electronic and electrical systems under limited supervision. This team member will be responsible for the development, interpretation and adaptation of project plans, techniques, designs, drawings, schematics, and layouts to oversee the completion of projects by reviewing, analyzing and integrating the technical work of others to support teaching and research activities within the department.

This is an at-will grant funded staff position. Currently, the position is funded for the next two years though the department has successfully funded this position for the past 33 years. This position involves working on both national and international field projects with occasional hours being worked outside the normal workday, including evenings and weekends along with intermittent travel to support scientific field campaigns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review and analyze a variety of engineering, research, and/or computer-enhanced systems to determine requirements to meet technical objectives.
  • Create wiring diagrams and collect data for electrical load analyses.
  • Consult with engineers, researchers, staff and/or vendors; design, construct or modify equipment and instruments based on information provided such as written specifications, drawings, rough sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Direct the completion of projects by determining technical requirements and work objectives; coordinate work assignments and schedules; calculate cost estimates for materials and components.
  • May be responsible for budget management including purchasing authority, assigned signing authority, and monitoring expenditures to stay within budget limits.
  • Evaluate and provide expert-level technical information and analysis for troubleshooting, repairs, reports, bid requests and instructions concerning proper operating procedures for equipment.
  • Evaluate and perform expert-level troubleshooting of electrical and electronic equipment to determine the nature of malfunctions and extent of repair or modification required to properly repair equipment.
  • Perform expert-level calibration of equipment and instruments and monitor performance to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  • Read and interpret maintenance manuals in conjunction with developing or modifying standard operating procedures.
  • Design, analyze, build and test special-purpose equipment, systems and/or instrumentation for research purposes.
  • Assist faculty, staff, students, or public with technical problems by providing technical expertise.
  • Assist with development, review and approval of design and construction documents for FAA compliance and conformity, as directed.
  • Follow detailed written and oral instructions by communicating ideas and concepts clearly and concisely.
  • May perform all other duties within the Technician series.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist faculty, staff and students with electrical and electronic design problems and may provide training.
  • Instruct others on troubleshooting, repairing, installation, and operation of equipment.
  • Prepare and update technical reports and operating, maintenance and repair manuals for equipment, machinery, and systems.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Associate’s degree in a related field, or completion of related technical or vocational education/training or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience: 9 years work-related experience in the design, construction, fabrication, repair and maintenance of electronic equipment or systems or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • FAA A&P license or experience with aircraft systems
  • Prepare and interpret electrical and electronic diagrams, schematics, blueprints using expert-level principles and practices
  • Read and interpret manuals to perform expert-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs for equipment and instrumentation.
  • Expert level of calibration methods and techniques for tools and equipment associated with the position.
  • Expert-level electrical, electronic, and basic mechanical design and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to use specialty tools and equipment such as soldering iron, digital voltmeter, specialty crimp tools, oscilloscope, waveform generator, network analyzer using proper methods and techniques.
  • Document complete and accurate records of designs, modifications, specifications, and inventories.
  • Expert-level safety inspection methods and techniques for safe operation of complex lab, research, testing, aircraft, and computer equipment.
  • Assembly of individual components for complex systems integration.
  • Ability to be a team player by showing strong customer service, communication skills, and self-motivation.
  • FAA A&P license or experience with aircraft systems

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Shop environment/lab environment; regular exposure to electrical, mechanical, chemical and fire/explosive hazards, fumes, and vapors. Occasionally subject to confined spaced. Position will travel regularly.
