MARINE MAMMAL OBSERVER – KETCHIKAN, AK

Dawson Construction, LLC is growing and looking for an experienced, motivated Marine Mammal Observer to join our team in Ketchikan, Alaska. Construction work at the Ketchikan Revilla and Gravina Terminal Facilities require work to be performed that may have an impact on native marine mammals. To ensure the safety of marine mammals during construction, Dawson Construction is hiring two (2) Marine Mammal Observers—one full time and one part time—to track marine mammals entering the waters of the Tongass Narrows and Clarence Straight. The duration of work will be November 2022 –July 2023 (may extend as needed). These positions will be based onsite in the field office in Ketchikan.

The Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) will work closely with the Lead Marine Mammal Monitor (LMMO)to identify marine mammals and their proximity to the project site. The MMO specifically must be able to distinguish between:

  • Steller sea lion
  • Harbor seal
  • Harbor porpoise
  • Dall’s porpoise
  • Pacific white sided dolphin
  • Orca whale
  • Humpback whale
  • Minke whale

Qualifications

  • MMO must have prior experience monitoring marine mammals, OR training, OR an undergraduate degree in biological sciences or related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Extremely organized and exhibit a high attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple team members
  • Available to work overtime if necessary
  • Ability to visually identify and distinguish species of Alaskan marine mammals (glasses are permissible), sometimes using binoculars
  • Ability to conduct field observations and collect data according to assigned protocols, and relay that information to the Lead MMM and Project Superintendent
  • Ability to communicate verbally, by radio and in person, with project personnel about marine mammals observed in the area
  • Ability to work inside and outside for prolonged periods of time in varying weather conditions

Pay: $30.00 - $31.50 per hour

  • Ketchikan, AK 99901: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)
