SUMMARY

Under periodic supervision, this individual is responsible for a variety of tasks involving public service. Employees will acquire skills needed through on-the-job training. This individual would substitute as needed in all branches during all hours that the branches are open. This individual performs related and other work as required.


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Training and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.


Preferred Training and Experience

  • Paid customer service work experience involving frequent interactions with the public.
  • Experience planning and/or presenting programs, utilizing books, crafts and/or other activities, to appropriate audiences is preferred.
  • Experience working in library.

Highly Desirable Training and Experience

  • Successful completion of college coursework.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good knowledge of current technology.


Ability to:

  • Use Dewey Decimal system;
  • use integrated library system, and electronic and printed materials, resources and databases;
  • learn and follow library principles, policies and procedures;
  • understand and follow written and oral instructions;

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, twist, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds. Employee must frequently push and/or pull loaded book carts weighing up to 75 pounds.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Public Services: Depending upon location assignment, performs reference, readers' advisory, youth services, circulation, outreach and/or special collection duties; assists patrons in the selection of materials and the use of other library equipment, services, and/or special collections; answers routine questions; takes interlibrary loan requests; assists patrons in the use of databases, digital resources, Internet usage, software applications and hardware configuration; conducts computer classes; plans and/or provides programming to various target audiences; conducts and attends community outreach programs; plans and/or participates in system-wide outreach activities for targeted audiences; promotes library services and fosters positive relationships with community organizations and/or schools; gives library tours; coordinates displays and promotional signage; answers telephone; charges, discharges and renews library materials; registers new borrowers; updates registration records; pulls and processes request materials; empties book drop; assists with filing & sorting; shelves library materials; straightens library materials on shelves; reads shelves for proper order; searches for lost library materials; processes incoming materials; assesses and collects fines for overdue materials and payment for lost materials from patrons; makes change for patrons; collects and records payment for miscellaneous transactions.
  • Access Services: unpacking and inspecting items received for the library collection; matching up work slips and physical items; verifying that work slip information is correct and that items have all component parts; reporting deficiencies in items' physical condition to supervisor; affixing property stamp, barcode and RFID tags to items neatly and consistently; placing, replacing, or adjusting book jackets; proofreading and attaching printed labels; changing out cases on AV items; processing items supplied by or destined for interlibrary loan lending partners; cleaning and buffing discs using specialized equipment; sorting items into transit boxes between system libraries; posting system mail.
  • Reports: Assists in the preparation of reports and maintenance of records.
  • Professional Development: Meets quarterly with supervisor to review work plan; attends other meetings as necessary. This position requires travel to other locations for work, meetings, and training.
  • Facility Management: Performs routine housekeeping duties including cleaning restroom, dusting and sweeping floors.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Monday - Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Thursday - Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Sunday: 12:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

SALARY

$13.50/hour + some benefits


Applicants will have no permanent commitments during these hours and must be willing to work at the following full-time branches: Atkins, Broadmoor, Cedar Grove, David Raines, Hamilton/South Caddo, Hollywood/union Avenue, Main, Mooretown, North Shreveport, Wallette, and West Shreve. May accept substitute bookings at North Caddo and the part-time branches and Access Services departments but priority must be given to the substitute needs of the branches listed here. There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours a substitute may work in a given week; however, substitutes must work a minimum of 200 hours per quarter to remain as an SML employee.




A criminal background check and a drug screening are part of the pre-hire process. The State of Louisiana Revised Statute 15:587.1.1 requires fingerprinting by local law enforcement and background checks by the Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and these checks will be conducted on a yearly basis for positions which provide outreach to daycare centers. A mandatory full day orientation is part of the new hire process; these orientations are on Tuesdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
