Librarian

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the principal, to assist and enable teaching staff and students to effectively use the instructional materials in the media center, and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities to take full advantage of library materials and resources. The librarian will also create an enriching library/media center environment with a wide range of reading and other educational materials; maintains library collection at the school site; develops appropriate programs for students utilizing library resources; instructs students and others on the proper use of the library resources.

The position may also require working with students in small group intervention.

Essential Functions

  • Teach library skills to classrooms
  • Assists students in locating references and other instructional materials, and in developing knowledge, skill, and abilities to gain independence and fully utilize the library materials and resources.
  • Assists in reinforcement in reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, media, and other skills.
  • Assists in maintaining the circulation desk operations and circulation files.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment as needed.
  • Assist in cataloging and filing learning materials.
  • Constructs, copies, distributes, and uses educational materials.
  • Serves as a reference guide for students.
  • Arranges book displays, exhibits, and other items to provide an appropriate learning resource environment and maximize students' interest in reading and learning.
  • Assists with the selection of library materials and resources, and in weeding out old outdated materials and books.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Ability to use personal computers and instruct students in their use (including creating documents, word processing, and using the Internet to conduct research).
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees, and others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Effective writing and communication skills.

Qualifications Profile:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Prefer some college experience.
  • Librarian experience preferred.
  • Prior experience working with children is desirable.
  • At least 18 years of age,
  • Ability to pass the paraprofessional praxis or present the equivalent in college credits,

Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance records for all middle school students. Monitor daily attendance and follow up with teachers and parents on unexcused absences or tardies. Prepare attendance reports for school administrators and district officials as required.

Serve as the primary point of contact for middle school attendance-related inquiries from teachers, parents, and students. Communicate with parents regarding attendance policies, procedures, and concerns. Collaborate with teachers to address attendance-related issues and implement strategies to improve student attendance.

Manage the middle school front office, including greeting and assisting visitors, answering phone calls, directing inquiries to the appropriate personnel, and maintaining office supplies and equipment. Provide general administrative support to the school staff, such as preparing documents, managing schedules, and organizing files.

Enter attendance data accurately and efficiently into the school's student information system. Generate attendance reports and other administrative reports as needed. Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with school policies and regulations.

Maintain organized and secure attendance records, including student attendance sheets, reports, and other related documents. Ensure that attendance records are kept in compliance with state and district regulations and policies.

Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and other staff to develop and implement strategies to improve student attendance. Participate in attendance-related meetings, trainings, and workshops as required.

Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities and be responsible for the knowledge of school evacuation procedures and lock-down procedures and the ability to implement those procedures independently in emergency situations.

Communicate with staff, parents, district personnel and others in a positive and encouraging manner.

Know and follows school policy and the chain of command.

Act ethically and confidentially in all aspects of employment.

Perform such district-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
