Job description
  • Reports directly to the assigned asst. Chief as an agent for the SCDC inspector general.
  • A k9 agent conducts unannounced searches of SCDC institutions, employee and visitor vehicles and other areas as directed.
  • Provides weekly intelligence to assistant chief regarding assigned area of coverage. Initiates arrests & conducts investigations on suspects during k9 operations.
  • Prepares reports and documentation for court proceedings.
  • Maintains assigned state vehicle and equipment in accordance with agency policy.
  • Assists fed, state & local officials in drug interdiction operations.
  • Assists with locating escaped inmates and fugitives as needed.
  • Conduct k9 drug dog demonstrations to various state & civic organizations.
  • Other law enforcement duties to include non-k9 related administrative and criminal investigations. Residency requirement: must reside in one of the following counties: Lancaster, Kershaw, Chesterfield, Darlington, Marlboro, Dillon, Marion, Horry, Florence, and Lee.

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A High School diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required Law Enforcement experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:(Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).

  • A Bachelor's degree.
  • One (1) year experience in law enforcement;
OR
  • An Associate degree
  • Two (2) years’ experience in law enforcement;
OR
  • A High School diploma
  • Three (3) years experience in law enforcement.

Required certification:

Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976 which requires either current Class I certification by the SCCJA or Class I certification by the SCCJA within 1 year of employment.
