The Legal Contract Specialist performs activities associated with business transactions involving or affecting MD Anderson, specifically including the development, negotiation, documentation, execution and modification of:

(a) sponsored/supported research related agreements, including clinical study agreements, preclinical study agreements, and consortium agreements;

(b) material transfer agreements (MTAs) and data transfer agreements;

(c) federal and foundation contracts, grant agreements and subcontracts; and/or

(d) other research related agreements as requested.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors degree and at least four years of qualifying experience to include at least two years of experience reviewing, analyzing, drafting or negotiating contracts. Previous experience with research-related contracts is highly preferred.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Legal Contract Research Professional

1. Independently performs all functions of a Legal Contract Specialist with substantial experience and skill, as such functions are described by the Position Description.

2. Performs all functions of a research contract specialist as directed by the Supervisor - Research Agreements (Industry/MTA/Federal & Foundation) and/or the Director - Research Agreements, and in the absence of those individuals, by the Legal Officer - IP/Research, Senior Legal Officer - IP/Research or the Managing Legal Officer IP, including communication with faculty and staff concerning MD Anderson's research related transactions, including review, analysis, and negotiation of agreements as appropriate.

3. Reviews and negotiates research related contracts that may include sponsored/supported research agreements (including clinical study agreements, preclinical study agreements, consortium agreements), material transfer agreements, data transfer agreements, federal and foundation contracts, grant agreements and subcontracts, and/or other research related agreements as requested and assures that contractual language complies with applicable state and federal laws, UT System (Regents') rules, and Institutional standards and that the contracts are negotiated and finalized in accordance with UT System and Institutional requirements and procedures.

Legal Contract Research Resource

1. Maintains up-to-date and accurate records and reports of research contracts processed, and monitors research agreement metrics as requested. Tracks the research agreement process through applicable institutional databases and systems and communicates negotiation status in a proactive, timely and accurate manner.

2. Assists the Supervisor - Research Agreements (Industry/MTA/Federal & Foundation), the Director - Research Agreements, and/or legal officers with implementation of departmental initiatives and process improvements.

3. Provides guidance and responds to requests from MD Anderson faculty and staff related to research related agreements, processing, and administrative issues in a timely manner.

REQUIREMENTS

Required Education: Bachelor's degree. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience.

Required Experience: Four years of experience in a law office environment or in general business to include two years of reviewing, analyzing, drafting, or negotiating contracts.

Preferred Experience: Previous experience working with research-related contracts.
