Overview:
The Specialist is responsible for working with the section supervisor, manager and director(s) to maintain technical and procedural operations in the section and may include a testing bench assignment. This includes, but is not limited to researching, developing and implementing new or improved procedures and instrumentation, performing and/or reviewing quality control, and quality improvement and regulatory/compliance assignments. Assists in project development/implementation, quality assurance, training and competency testing for staff and may assist the Supervisor/Manager in their absence.

Responsibilities:
  • Understands and demonstrates Nationwide Children?s Hospital Staff Core Competencies.
  • Demonstrates self-management skills. Demonstrates the ability to work efficiently and independently, promoting a team environment and maintaining a cooperative and supportive atmosphere.
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to position and clinical laboratories.
  • Develops, writes and updates procedures as requested. Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required.
  • Adequately performs computer skills to produce reports/graphs as needed. Demonstrates the discipline-specific technical and computer skills required for the appropriate section of the laboratory.
  • Assists Manager by serving as a liaison with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and may help coordinate the inspections by CAP for all laboratory locations. Organizes the selection of CAP survey materials and reviews performance. Assists Manager with the Laboratory Inspection Team to prepare for inspections, this includes the self-inspections performed during non-survey years.
  • Assists in process development/improvement within the department including participating in quality assurance, continuing education programs, and department meetings.
  • Demonstrates the initiative and ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement. Promotes a cohesive work environment and identifies resolutions to improve moral.
  • Works with others to ensure Laboratory Safety training and education for all laboratory staff members.In Lab Testing Areas (non-waived testing).
  • Fulfills the role of the CAP General Supervisor for High Complexity testing and Technical Consultant for Moderate Complexity testing.
  • Maintains a safe environment. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated by lab area. Reports spills and hazardous situations immediately and acts appropriately. Follows established guidelines for disclosure of patient information.
  • Responsible for overseeing training for all employees during orientation period, new procedures/updates, annual competencies, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Demonstrates the initiative and ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement. Promotes a cohesive work environment and identifies resolutions to improve moral.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives by addressing problems by using resolutions and basic troubleshooting skills. Able to resolve technical, computer, and customer service problems/concerns with in the lab section.
Qualifications:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Minimum requirements
:
  • Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science; or a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited institution, - OR - Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification with a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or clinical laboratory science and significant experience in a similar laboratory. Prefer American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certified. Specialists who do not perform testing (QA oversight, etc.) certification is not required.
  • 3-5 years of similar laboratory experience.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and communicate effectively with department staff and internal/external customers.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand or sit for more than 1 hour at a time. Good visual and auditory acuity. Full use of hands and arms. Ability to speak clearly. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
