GENERAL SUMMARY

Assistants prepare specimens, carry out basic laboratory procedures and run simpler tests such as urinalysis. As with other types of medical assistants, those in the lab have clerical tasks such as greeting patients, informing them of the procedures, answering phones and emails, and maintaining records.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Phlebotomy
  • Performs basic laboratory procedures
  • Specimen preparation
  • Maintains daily quality control
  • Performs proficiency testing
  • Records and maintains appropriate logs
  • Alerts providers of abnormal results
  • Prepares inventory and order supplies
  • Maintain lab results/medical records audits
  • Assists medical assistants performing vital
  • Assist providers on translations if necessary
  • Responsible for administering and properly recording patient and employee immunizations
  • Receive and process samples to identify suitability
  • Prepare samples for testing using various types of laboratory equipment
  • Perform laboratory testing, including pH and bacterial culturing
  • Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory records
  • Label specimens accurately and distribute them to the appropriate department
  • Perform quality control as directed by their supervisor or other members of management
  • Clean and maintain work area and all lab equipment and supplies
  • If Lab Assistant is an MA, may be required to provide MA coverage as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Bilingual (Spanish) dependent on site and the patients served on that site. (May be required to communicate with and assist non-English/Spanish only speaking patients and/or guests.)
  • Ability to Multitask
  • Attention to Details
  • Fine motor skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work for timely completion
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Able to easily understand complex instructions
  • Able and willing to maintain strict level of confidentiality regarding laboratory results and records
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • CPR certification – must always be current

Experience and Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Certificate of trainings (Phlebotomist, l4e Emergency Medical Tech, Medical Assistant, other),
  • One to two years experience working in a medical setting as an MA or Lab Assistant preferred
