Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, Halau Kupukupu, Kumuola Marine Science Education Center (Kumuola) is hiring Student Research Aids for Summer 2023! Eligible students are 15-18 years old, enrolled or recently graduated (<1yr) from high school, and interested in loko i'a, marine science, environmental science, aina-based education, or community engagement. Student Research Aids will work alongside Kumuola staff on relevant research, data collection and education related to the rehabilitation of loko i'a in Hawaii. Applicants are eligible to work up to 30 hours per week between June 5 and July 21, 2023, compensated at $13/hour.
Student Research Aids will have access to a diversity of field experts and will be encouraged to explore and identify areas of personal interest that align to their passions and our mission. No prior knowledge or experience with loko i'a is required, but the right applicant will have a growth mindset, positive attitude, desire to be part of a collaborative team, and be comfortable outdoors in and around the loko i'a. Job Summary
Provides general assistance to various program activities as necessary.
Essential Functions
  • Assists in the program as needed to include but not limited to assisting with clerical duties, snacks or lunches, student supervision and running errands. May assist in the classroom, during outdoor activities, in the dining hall, on field trips, in the Summer School office, etc.
Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirements listed.
  • Good organizational skills required to prepare program materials on a scheduled basis and to juggle multiple duties.
  • Flexibility and ability to adjust to changing environments necessary to assist wherever needed in the program.
  • Ability to work well with students and other program staff.
  • Ability and desire to work with school-aged children.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of computers and applications.
  • Experience with similarly aged children.
  • Valid drivers’ license.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.
  • Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.
Working Conditions
  • This position may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands to conduct business.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.
  • Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours but evening and weekend hours are often required to meet goals and objectives.
