Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

This is a supervisory position. Incumbent will assign, direct, review and evaluate the job performance of Juvenile Corrections Officers I (JCO I) under his/her supervision. The incumbent is to serve as support to the Juvenile Corrections Officers I (JCO I) and facilitate day to day operations. Incumbent will supervise varying areas or units within the facility depending on the post.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Full range supervisory corrections work, ensuring public safety by providing oversight of juveniles and support to reintegration programs.

  • Supervises Juvenile Corrections Officer I's through direct contact and works indirectly with other staff.

  • Conducts performance reviews by reviewing and evaluating performance within the time parameter.

  • Provide ongoing proactive communications and interactions with juveniles designed to disrupt, rather than reinforce antisocial behavior and inappropriate reactions to situations

  • Stay abreast of policy and regulation changes/updates.

  • Work directly with other departments within the facility to foster and model a multi-disciplinary approach.

  • Serves as a role model and productive member of the agency.


Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Licensing & Certification: Driver's License and Handle with Care (HWC) certificate.

  • Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of experience in the care, control and treatment of offenders. Coursework in criminal justice or the behavioral sciences may be substituted for the required experinece as determined relevant by the agency. Free from felony convictions.

  • Preferred Qualifications: Certification as a JCO by the Deputy Secretary of Juvenile Services. This is issued upon completions of Basic Training and must be renewed annually as prescribed by the Commissioner. CPR as provided in annual in-service training. Ability to deal with individuals under restraint. Knowledge of the procedures and practices of supervising juveniles. Previous supervisory experience and ability to lead and counsel subordinates.

  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must take and pass a drug screening test provided by Office of Personnel Services. Must complete a background investigation.
