Irrigation Technician FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

A person who works under the supervision of a licensed irrigator to install, maintain, alter, repair, service or supervise installation of an irrigation system, including the connection of such system in or to a private or public, raw or potable water supply system or any water supply.

Major Job Responsibilities

Customer Management

  • Represents a professional image with all crew members, by maintaining proper employee actions, and through the use of approved USL uniform
  • Able to respond properly to the customer and follow up to make sure their needs have been completed to their satisfaction.
  • Able to recognize when they do not have the answer for the customer and let them know they will find out or get the Owner/Manager involved.
  • Keeps the Owner/Manager aware of all customer concerns and communication on the job site.
  • Maintains positive, responsive and flexible attitude to all customers.
  • Inspects site and advises customer of potential liabilities.
  • Ensures that all programming of irrigation clocks on the property are scheduled to operate during non-business hours, unless otherwise dictated by state watering policies.
  • Informs the onsite Customer the progress of any ongoing repair that will last more than a day.

Employee Management

  • Schedules workload in the afternoon prior to the next work day.
  • Prepares and secures all materials, tools and equipment at the end of the day for the next day’s schedule.

Safety Management

  • Maintains and promotes safe working conditions in the field at all times
  • Wears and maintains required PPE at all times as per local, state, federal and OSHA laws.
  • Have zero preventable accidents due to not following the company safety rules.
  • Participates in safety tailgate meetings with the crew.
  • Ensures and maintains secure storage of all products by local, state, federal and OSHA laws.
  • Ensures that all active repairs that involve open dug areas be taped off by caution tape and the use of safety cones.

Brand Compliance

  • Maintains clean, neat and professional image of service vehicle & equipment

Equipment Management

  • Ensures all assigned equipment, tools, safety items, vehicles & trailers or other items are maintained in proper working order by through proper maintenance
  • Is accountable for neglect and abuse of assigned equipment
  • Maintain and secures equipment to include the functionality, storage and cleanliness

Quality Control/Scheduling

Quality Control

  • Understand the Quality Control Inspection Form and informs Crew Leader/Manager/Owner of current site conditions.
  • Able to maintain all jobs to bid specifications.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction (internal and external) to ensure jobs are renewed.
  • Ensures that all disturbed areas for trenching or digging or repaired back to original site specifications.

Irrigation

  • Monitors all irrigation controllers.
  • Has zero loss of plant material due to poor controller monitoring.
  • Knows the location of all water meters and backflow shut off devices for each job site.
  • Keeps owner/manager aware irrigation repairs needed.

Field Operations

  • Test and run and inspect each system and record notes of the system on the irrigation Service Request form.
  • Set controllers according to contractual obligations always adhering to a water wise approach.
  • Follow water restrictions in setting controllers.
  • Make necessary adjustments such as adjusting Irrigation patterns, dates, times, run times and frequencies on timer clock/controller,
  • Make necessary repairs such as breaks in the line, bad heads, nozzles, valves, wiring, etc.
  • Record all work including hours spent, materials used and recommendation if renovations are required.
  • Knows the principles of irrigation operation and repair.
  • Locates existing backflows, controllers, zones and valves and prepares zone charts / diagrams / legends for the systems
  • Responsible for “spring startup” of systems and diagnosis
  • Properly winterizes irrigation systems to prevent freeze damage to all exterior pipe and heads as well as backflow prevention systems
  • Reads and understands various manuals, blueprints and schematics
  • Can perform or assist with major irrigation repairs as necessary.
  • Can work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Can remain flexible for working with a variety of tasks daily.
  • Can remain on-call to respond to emergency situations

Office and Administration

  • Able to read and write English and follow written and oral instruction.
  • Can organize and implement work schedule.
  • Responsible for the following forms and procedures:

● Accident Kit ● Equipment Inventory Form

● Equipment Service Calendar ● Equipment Repair/Request

● Landscape Management Report ● Monthly Vehicle Safety Inspection

● Quality Control Inspection Form ● Safety Meeting

● Spray Request ● Tailgate Meeting Form

● Trailer Safety Inspection Form ● Pesticide Application Record

  • Keep up with current industry specifications, products and equipment.
  • Follow current local, state and federal irrigation regulations and licensing.
  • Maintain company files associated with Irrigation Technician tasks. These are recording activities on each property, maintaining inventory of products, placing orders for products, receiving product deliveries or getting products.
  • Responsible for reading, understanding MSDS sheets.
  • Maintain area for irrigation parts/supplies and properly insure safety of fellow employees and self
  • Shall possess a valid State driver’s license appropriate to the class and capability of the vehicle(s) that they are assigned to operate and driving record must meet company standards as well as the State requirements where the vehicle is driven.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
