CULVER SUMMER SCHOOL & CAMPS OVERVIEW Founded in 1902, the Culver Summer Schools & Camps (CSSC) program is unique. It is a fun-filled, naturally beautiful 1,800-acre setting on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee, Indiana's second-largest natural lake. Each summer, nearly 1,400 young people from around the world, take part in our three summer programs: Junior Woodcraft Camp (3 nights, ages 7-9 years old), Woodcraft Camp (ages 9 - 14 years old, six-weeks) and Upper Schools (ages 14-17 years old, six weeks). The summer students and campers at Culver develop positive self-esteem through accomplishment and self-discipline.

CULVER SUMMER NAVAL SCHOOL (CSNS): The Culver Summer Naval School is our flagship Summer program, founded in 1902 in support by the United States Navy under a special act of Congress with authorized the equipment for our inaugural Summer to set sail. Still to this day, The United States Navy recognizes Culver as an "Honor Naval School." In addition, Culver is the first non-profit affiliate member of US SAILING to certify in Small Boat, Keelboat, and Coastal Navigation. Our current fleet is comprised of over 120 boats, including the 65-foot, 25-ton R.H.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Tasks include supervising day-to-day instruction to ensuring efficient curriculum implementation for all Divisions. • Conduct a two-week Summer Naval School staff training program, and continued staff development including performance reviews of the Naval School instructors to ensure that the students are receiving the highest quality instruction and support as the students learn leadership through the sailing and seamanship courses. • Supervise and validate US Sailing certifications for Coastal Navigation, Keelboat, and Small Boat for eligible Summer Naval School students. • Deliver instruction, coaching, and appropriate equipment management as required to deliver a comprehensive experience for participants in Culver's Summer Naval School.

To include weekly sailing and seamanship competitions, as well as excellent and timely organization, communication, and implementation of end of camp relays and Naval School award recipients. • Assist the Boat Crew with launching, rigging and timely maintenance of all boats used in the Summer Naval School. • Assist the Boat Crew with decommissioning the balance of the Summer School fleet and preparing for winter storage. Assess the condition of all boats; identify repairs and/or maintenance to be done on each.

  • Serve on the Upper School Senior Staff leadership team as a liaison and advocate for the students and staff that comprise the Culver Summer Naval School. REQUIREMENTS • A bachelor's degree in education, recreation, or a related field is required. • Minimum 8 years of experience in all phases of sailing instruction. • Ability to work effectively in the Microsoft Office Suite to include calendaring, email, word, and spreadsheets.
  • Lifeguard certification, proficiency in first aid care, and certified in CPR. • Holds instructional qualifications and ongoing certification with US Sailing, additional certifications from other recognized national governing bodies optional. • Must be capable and experienced in watercraft maintenance, replacement, and acquisition for a broad fleet of vessels. • Must be an effective communicator, able to interact in a timely and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated people management experience and capabilities. • Effective planning and organizational skills. • Possess a valid driver's license (chauffeur's license preferred). • Available for travel on overnight trips.
