Under the supervision of the Public Information, Education, and Training Branch Manager in DSHS Immunizations, the Information Specialist IV contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of statewide public awareness initiatives geared toward increasing overall immunization rates in Texas. Develops and maintains relationships with healthcare providers and partners in the field of immunization. Writes various messages for internal and external audiences. Works with contractors to create and launch professional quality public awareness and multimedia. Conducts periodic reviews to determine compliance with state and federal media regulations.


Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

  • (55%) Develops relationships with external stakeholders to promote immunization messaging and campaigns. Creates informal and/or formal partnerships and encourages entities to provide education to professions or association members about immunization. Works with partners to understand what type of education to provide to members.


  • (20%) Supports the work of the public information team, as needed, in the following areas: website updates; graphic design support; and participation in the coordination of public education initiatives. Assists in writing and distributing memos and announcements via the GovDelivery subscription service.


  • (15%) Helps coordinate various special events (conferences, learning/development activities, etc.) for staff, contractors and other program stakeholders.


  • (5%) Assists in the development and implementation of an immunization internal and external communication strategic plan. Assists in developing programmatic communication and marketing policies and procedures to ensure quality and consistency in public information materials.


  • (5%) Performs other duties as assigned which include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

    Initial Selection Criteria:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field preferred.

  • Experience in public health, public promotion and education, and/or immunizations.



  • Additional Information:
  • This is a grant-funded position with funding currently secured through July 2025.

  • This position is required to work in the office two days a week.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
