Position Summary:

The Independent Living Advocate works with persons with disabilities to maximize their independence in the community. The ILA has a strong commitment to WOIL’s mission and values. Assist consumers by providing or supporting the center's core services. Organizes and participates in public forums, disability related advocacy groups and community education efforts relevant to independent living in WOIL’s service area. Completes all required documentation and reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Independent Living Services:

• Provides information and referral services to people with disabilities and the community.

• Completes demographic information. Discusses and documents the consumer’s concerns and desires. Makes additional referrals to WOIL (Walton Options for Independent Living,) or other programs, as necessary.

• Establishes eligibility for services based upon written objective criteria that is nondiscriminatory and consistent with Walton Options’ mission.

• Facilitates self-assessment and identification of independent living related service needs by the consumer. Assist them with arranging for and meeting these needs.

• Assist with the development of ILP (Independent Living Plan) with specific goals and planning to promote consumers’ needs and preferences to work towards their desired independence. Regularly revisit these plan(s) and goal(s), updating as needed and noting progress.

• Updates and maintains IL (Independent Living) related services provided and goals met using CilSuite and other confidential tracking methods, including consumer folders.

• When necessary, travel to consumers’ homes or other community settings to complete visual assessment of need throughout the service region or provide services.

• Provides and promotes Independent Living Services.

• Actively promote disability rights and independent living philosophy through all activities conducted within and on behalf of the organization.

• Provides peer support when requested or identified and/or coordinates the use of other peer supporters as appropriate.

• Provides independent living skills training on an individual or group basis as necessary and requested.

• Promotes self-advocacy by teaching individuals how to access services, assert their rights, obtain funding, and attain their goals.

• Participates in systems advocacy activities by voicing opinions at public hearings/meetings and educating public officials through letter writing or other appropriate means on issues related to independent living, housing, and public health.

• Assist with planning, implementing, and follow-up for special and outreach events.

• Help develop and implement outreach plans and outreach materials.

• Monitors pertinent federal legislation, particularly as it relates to individuals with disabilities, aging, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Health and Housing.

• Communicate with representatives of other groups in our service area regarding housing and public health related matters.

• Completes consumer service surveys.

• Complete all reporting and record keeping as required.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 - $13.75 per hour
