Job Summary


This position works under the direct supervision of the UCDHS Compensation Manager to provide administrative, technical and analytical support to the unit. As an initial point of contact, this position works closely with department managers, supervisors, Medical Center and Schools of Health HR personnel, union representatives, and UCDHS employees on issues regarding staff classification and compensation.

Department Description

The Compensation Unit maintains salary administration across the Davis Health organization, reviews and makes pay and classification decisions for all new and occupied staff employee positions, and prepares and presents salary and economic proposals for the University in local and system-wide collective bargaining processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced computer skills to select and utilize various software programs such as word-processing, spreadsheets, web site maintenance and database program management.
  • Extensive experience with MS Office Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint and Outlook (email and calendaring systems).
  • Organizational skills to create establish systems for quick retrieval of information. Ability to maintain accurate attention to detail and perform daily functions with minimal errors.
  • Excellent analytical skills to research and collect information to develop and produce detailed correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, charts, graphs and presentation materials.
  • Demonstrated professional interpersonal skills to skills to interact and communicate diplomatically and tactfully with diverse groups; including UCDHS and UCD staff, collective bargaining unions, vendors and outside agencies and internal HR staff to effectively comprehend needs and efficiently respond to inquiries and concerns.
  • Independently and proactively manage and prioritize workload to ensure that all responsibilities are met in a timely and organized manner. Consistently manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and last minute changes.
  • Problem solving skills to independently identify issues, research viable resources, create an alternative solution and take the necessary action to implement resolution to ensure prompt and satisfactory resolution.
  • Strong initiative to work cooperatively in a team environment and develop effective working relationships with individuals at all UCDHS organizational levels and within HR department, as well as outside agencies.
  • Exceptional listening, problem solving, and verbal communication skills to clearly and concisely communicate information while ensuring the individuals understand related HR policies and guidelines. Effectively elicit information to clarify questions and resolve problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of the structure and functions of UCDHS Human Resources Units, with particular understanding of Compensation, Recruitment, Records and Labor Relations/collective bargaining functions, preferred.
  • Knowledge of classification and compensation practices, including policies and procedures as well as fundamental HR principles, preferred.
  • Knowledge of the organizational structure and hierarchy of UCDHS, including the School of Medicine, preferred.
  • Experience with UC PATH, People Admin, Sales Force or similar navigation of payroll or personnel systems preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime to meet deadlines and complete projects and assignments.
  • May travel between Sacramento and Davis locations as well as Office of the President in Oakland as needed.
  • This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
