JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education: Associate Degree or two (2) years of college in programs of social work, sociology, political science, public administration, communication and/or non-profit.

Or

Job Related Experience: Minimum of 1 year with progressively more responsible experience in a similar setting.

Other: Demonstrated ability to speak, write and understand Spanish required. Experience and engagement in community service. Excellent communication and active listening skills. PIF Public Policy training helpful.

1. JOB SUMMARY

This position will provide housing advocacy and interpretation services to the community. This includes meeting with clients to assess needs and make referrals; provide interpretation and translation services to clients to help them access housing resources, assist them with reading documents, complete forms, participate in intake interviews, and communicate needs or questions to service agency staff, etc. Demonstrate the mission of VOCES and create a positive work environment for staff and clients. Must be Bilingual.

Major Job Responsibilities/Percentage of Time:

1. Facilitate an implementation plan that includes procedures for providing services to clients; engaging service agencies and community organizations; and developing a working knowledge of local programs, services, and resources.

2. Secure memorandums of understanding with local housing service providers*, as needed, to make referrals, act as a liaison and client advocate, and receive training on program guidelines, etc.

3. Develop an outreach plan that includes how interpretation and advocacy services will be promoted to groups less likely to access resources, particularly Hispanic and Latino households.

4. Complete program eligibility determinations for all clients receiving assistance to ensure they live or are seeking housing within the Battle Creek city limits and meet one of the following requirements: (1) low or moderate Income (less than 80% of Area Median Income); (2) meet the HUD definition of homeless; or (3) have experienced loss of income due to COVID-19. Maintain all records and files in accordance with HUD guidelines. This includes documenting household income, race, ethnicity, and other demographic information of persons served as required for reporting purposes.

5. Provide monthly activity and progress reports to designated City staff. Reports on client activity shall include at a minimum number of clients served, client demographic data, referrals made, and client outcomes. Reports on progress should include narrative regarding client outreach, service provider engagement, barriers identified, addressed, and/or unresolved, lessons learned, etc.

Corp., Southwestern Michigan Urban League, United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, Summit Pointe, Community Action, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, Haven of Rest Ministries, S.A.F.E. Place, The Coordinating Council, Homeless Coalition of Calhoun County, Neighborhoods, Inc. of Battle Creek, and the City of Battle Creek Community Development Division.

Physical and Mental Demands:
The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions.

Frequently sits for long periods of time. Repetitive hand movement in using of a keyboard and computer.
Occasional standing, walking, lifting less than 25 pounds and bending.
