Job Summary
Under general supervision, provides administrative and clerical assistance to support the operation of the assigned nursing unit. Collaborates with other staff and leaders in the development, management, and operation of the unit.

This role is eligible for shift differential when the majority of the hours worked fall in a night, weekend or evening shift.

Responsibilities

1. Monitors incoming computerized or written orders in a timely and accurate manner. Transcribes physicians’ orders accurately. Notifies RN of STAT orders. Clarifies difficult to read orders. 2. Acts as a greeter to the unit in a manner that shows awareness of cultural and age differences. Always maintains patient confidentially. Performs all duties in relating to the public, patients, and families with customer satisfaction as a goal. 3. Activates patients in appropriate systems. Obtains medical record number and patient stickers. Prepares chart, patient bands, and appropriate paperwork. Transfer patients’ information when necessary. Ensures paperwork is submitted and exchanged. 4. Prepares discharge, transfer or demise records and completes paperwork. Ensures records are ready to send to Medical Records. Prepares and distributes Flow Sheets for required units each day. Files face sheets, lab slips, and appointments in each patient chart on required units. 5. Prepares laboratory slips, enters orders in the computer, and calls/schedules appointments according to written or verbal orders. Organizes charts. 6. Answers phones and call lights in a timely manner. Takes accurate messages and relays patient info to Nursing. 7. Interacts in a professional manner with colleagues and the public, consistent wit the Denver Dozen, and the mission of Denver Health. Participates in the peer review process. 8. Acts as a liaison between the assigned unit and ancillary departments. 9. Accurately tracks census and log statistics for each day. 10. Submit work orders as necessary. 11. Send out Rave alerts to cover call outs. 12. Open and effective communication with Physicians and upcoming surgeries. 13. Send for patients in a timely manner. 14. Stock department documents as needed. 15. Practice telephone courtesy with all incoming and outgoing calls. 16. Maintain various unit spreadsheets (call ins, etc.) 17. Participate in daily huddles. 18. Help with additional tasks for the department, such as, faxing, scanning, typing, etc. 19. Scan documents to HIM 20. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Knowledge of medical terminology. 2. Must have mathematical and organizational abilities. 3. Good written and oral communication skills. 4. Must be detail oriented and able to problem solve minor issues. 5. Able to work in and around a busy surgical setting. 6. Ability to read and follow written instructions and to write brief notes about activities performed during the shift. 7. Ability to cover more than one unit. 8. Bilingual is a plus

Computers and Technology
1. Microsoft Office Suite required

Certificates, Licenses and Registration
1. Medical Terminology Certificate preferred Supervisory


Education and Experience
1. Graduation from High School or possession of a GED certificate
2. Typically, one-year clerical experience
3. Prefer six months in a medical setting or customer service-related industry
