Position Information


The Sinton Maintenance office is seeking a multitalented individual who takes initiative, has a positive work attitude and is capable and willing to address multiple tasks within varied disciplines. The maintenance office is responsible for maintaining the State right of ways within San Patricio County to ensure that roadways are being maintained for the safety of the traveling public.

Starting Annual Salary Range:

General Transportation Tech I (A14): $35,642 - $49,134
General Transportation Tech II (A15): $37,743 - $52,045

This job is posted for one (1) General Transportation Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicants' work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors.

Position Description


Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:
General Transporation Tech I:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts, as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assist with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades as well as flags traffic.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II:

Will perform all of the duties listed above, in addition to:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • No education required.

Experience:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • No experience.

General Transportation Tech II:

  • 1 year in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • Valid driver’s license at time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License with "N" endorsement within 120 days from hire date.

General Transportation Tech II:

  • Must have a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License at the time of application.
  • Must have or obtain an "N" endorsement within 90 calendar days from hire date.

Competencies:

General Transportation Tech I:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Using of light and heavy highway equipment

General Transportation Tech II:

All of those listed above and the following.

  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Plan review methods, processes and procedures
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
