External and Corporate Relations Vice-Presidency (ECR)

The mission of External and Corporate Relations (ECR) is to help deliver financial and political support for the World Bank Group, strengthen the Bank Group’s role as a global thought leader in development by enhancing and safeguarding its reputation, and supporting operational teams to achieve country outcomes. ECR manages corporate communications and global engagement with key stakeholders, including media, civil society, foundations, private sector, donor countries, and international organizations, as well as employee engagement. ECR also manages strategic communications for the World Bank’s Regions and Global Practices and leads the management of reputation risk.


Department context:

The ECR Media and Messaging unit (ECRME), housed in the Corporate Communications Department, works to build and maintain support for the Bank and its mission among key stakeholders through the delivery of strategic messaging and effective, consistent, timely, and professional interaction with the media. As the central media management function, it gives real-time communications advice to Bank Group leadership, particularly on high-profile or sensitive communications issues, in support of the institution’s broader strategy. ECRME develops, unifies, and aligns messaging across the World Bank Group and plays a key role in leading and supporting corporate strategies for important initiatives. The unit works with print, broadcast, and digital media outlets, and develops communications products to engage and inform shareholders, the media, and the broader public. ECRME also helps colleagues improve skills through guidance on best-practice media relations, training in media engagement and monitoring, as well as in effective messaging.
ECRME is looking for an Extended-Term Consultant (ETC)/External Affairs Associate with excellent news judgement and experience with broadcast media to coordinate broadcast work and manage our corporate calendars and media events. The position reports to the ECRME manager in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, pitch, and book broadcast interviews on institutional priorities.
  • Regularly monitor broadcast coverage of current events, public opinion, and other internal or external developments related to the Bank Group, highlighting to colleagues as relevant.
  • Act as liaison with social media and digital colleagues to ensure alignment of media and online work.
  • Build and maintain relationships with broadcasters and work on broadcast partnerships.
  • Work with technical colleagues to develop, plan, script, and deliver Video News Releases tied to major report launches and announcements.
  • Copy-edit and share transcripts of relevant broadcast stories and interviews within a time-pressured environment.
  • Write media briefs for interviewees as needed.
  • Develop, execute, and monitor the impact of communications strategies and campaigns that target key external audiences.
  • Respond to and re-direct broadcast media inquiries about the Bank.
  • Identify broadcast media stories that should be added to the daily media clips.
  • Manage the Corporate Calendars and internal relationships to ensure activities across the World Bank Group are well coordinated and aligned to institutional agenda, messaging, and priorities.
  • Produce monthly and quarterly plans to map out upcoming report launches and events to raise awareness of senior management and the broader Communications community.
  • Review Week Ahead Notes to ensure that events, announcements, and upcoming media are accurately captured before being shared with ECR Front Office
  • Provide weekly roundup of newsworthy blog posts to be included in the Week Ahead Note that is circulated to trusted media.
  • Manage invitations to events and provide recommendations on attendance, in consultation with the ECR Partnerships Team. Liaise with Partnerships team and ECR Front Office in responding invitations.
  • Coordinate with organizers on event logistics, work with external event organizers to set narrative for WBG senior leadership participation, and prepare briefing notes..
  • This role may require working on some weekends and late hours.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, plus at least two years of relevant practical experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with broadcast media tools and news production (technical skills such as camera operation and editing are not required).
  • Strong computer skills; proven ability to use standard technology packages, e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of web editing/content management systems a plus.
  • Strong interest in development issues, strategic communication, and multilateral cooperation, with the ability to disseminate information effectively and strategically.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; attention to detail, ability to interact with external and internal audiences of various types and levels and to make presentations to small groups.
  • Ability to work independently and to juggle multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Media experience, preferably as a broadcast journalist or producer is considered a plus for this position.
