Responsibilities

Healthy Start Academy seeks a part-time Grade K-8 ESL teacher who will:

· Create a caring and supportive ESL classroom environment

· Provide appropriate amounts of ESL support as students learn the language

· Provide extracurricular and in-classroom opportunities for English interaction

· Be empathetic to student emotions that surface in the learning situation

· Teach students to use effective learning strategies

· Teach children to read English with both fluency and comprehension

· Assist and advocate for ESL students

· Help students with cultural elements of the English-speaking classroom and community

· Act as a point of reference for greater community resources for immigrants and language learning

· Be a knowledgeable point of reference for cultural traditions of students' countries and cultures

· Work with classroom teachers to develop appropriate instructional strategies

· Scaffold student's learning using their native language

· Evaluate student's English comprehension

· Teach students to ask meaningful questions in English

· Help students discern information from stories and non-verbal communications - i.e. vocal intonation and facial expression

· Identify whether an article or story is fact or fiction, based on evidence

· Teach students how to communicate in a clear manner using standard English

Qualifications & Eligibility

• Healthy Start Academy faculty must be passionate, committed to teaching in historically underserved schools, and eager to teach effectively.

• Bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher preferred; 2.75 minimum

• Authorization to work in the U.S.

• English proficiency required

Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour

Schedule:

• 4 hour shift
• 8 hour shift

Ability to commute/relocate:

• Durham, NC 27701: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Required)

Experience:

• Adult education: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• Teaching Certification (Preferred)
