Salary Range: $25.53 - $34.47 hourly

*The above salary range will be in effect as of January 1, 2023*

Job Summary:

The Equipment Operator II performs skilled work in the operation of various heavy equipment in Street/Stormwater Maintenance. Serves as team leader and trains work teams consisting of full time and seasonal employees in a variety of Street/Stormwater Maintenance activities.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Minimum of three years’ experience performing heavy equipment operation duties.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in street and/or stormwater activities.
  • Class A CDL with Air Brake, and Tanker endorsements; or able to obtain within 90 days.
  • Working knowledge of City geography.
  • Traffic control and flagger certified desirable.
  • Concrete experience desirable.

Essential Functions:

  • Follow proper safety practices, procedures, and fellow team members, i.e., work zone setup, traffic control, personal protective equipment, etc. Make safety suggestions as appropriate.
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Trains team members on the operation, maintenance, and safety of heavy equipment.
  • Complete paperwork accurately, i.e., work orders, time sheets, etc.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Serves as team leader for teams in a variety of activities.
  • Effectively communicate in verbal and written form with citizens, supervisor, team members and other City employees.
  • Understand and follow City, Department and Division Policies & Procedures.
  • Use good judgment in decisions regarding the operation of heavy equipment and Street/Stormwater Maintenance activities.
  • Answer citizens’ questions, respond to their complaints and notify citizens of impending work.
  • Respond to overtime work and after-hour calls at all times; participate as on-call person.
  • Ability to enter work orders into CityWorks software.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently works in an outdoor environment subject to severe weather conditions extreme heat and cold.
  • Frequently works in and around equipment, traffic and materials with fumes, noise, dust, dirt, heat, vibration, and flying objects.
  • Frequently works in or around equipment in potentially dangerous situations, i.e., traffic, work zones, steep ditch banks, manholes, and/or confined spaces, trenches, overhead/underground utilities, snow, and ice-covered streets, etc.
  • Serves as on-call person on a rotational basis.
  • Responds to overtime work and after-hour calls, particularly during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Frequently work with objects weighing up to 15 pounds. Regularly works with objects weighing 30-50 pounds, and occasionally work with objects weighing 50-100 pounds in various positions such as pushing, pulling, lifting in various body position including above shoulder height.
  • Manual dexterity enough to complete work tasks through safe and proper operation of hand tools, power tools, motorized equipment, and confined space entry.
  • Possess the strength and stamina to frequently shovel and rake asphalt during an 8-12 hour shift. Other tasks include laying pipe, concrete work, patching asphalt, rip rapping, trimming trees, weed mowing, weed spraying, cleaning storm sewer inlets, etc.
  • Move equipment and/or materials safely over uneven surfaces and terrain.
  • Sit for long periods of time in equipment (4-6 hour durations).
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, reaching, etc.
  • Vision and hearing abilities required to operate a variety of light equipment in traffic and in work zones.
  • Equipment Used: Loader, motor grader, backhoe, skid steer, sewer cleaner, street sweeper, rollers, tractor with attachments, single/tandem axle dump trucks with and without spreader and plow, water trucks, semi-tractor with trailer, two-way radio, computers, computerized/automated equipment controls, gas detection monitors, tripod and harness for confined space entry and radio detection equipment.
